Server Essentials 2019 with Hyper-V DC - automated shutdown/license issue

I migrated from Small Business server 2008 to 2019 and read that I could setup the system to be a Host and VM using Hyper-V.  The host keeps turning off and I found an error in the logs telling me that "The Non-domain Member Check policy detected a condition in your environment that is out of compliance with the licensing policy. This server can only be in a workgroup or be a domain controller."  Do I need to remove the host from AD?

Yes, do not join host to domain. If domain joined it wants to be the root domain controller.
