Migrate offline Server 2008 Root CA

Copper Contributor

Hi. I have a Server 2008 Root CA that is in workgroup and is usually shutdown and only powers up every few months for updates. As per the instructions I've seen for moving a Root CA to a new server there is a step for uninstalling the CA role from the old server. Given that my old CA is in Workgroup and not on the domain do I need to perform that step? Also, I plan to use the the same Host name for the new 2019 server that I migrate the config to, to build the new Root CA.

Thanks

Thanks very much. I've seen these same instruction before but my question was more about the old CA. Do I have to remove the CA role or can I just shut down and remove the network and build the new CA with the same name as the old?

There's a pretty detailed discussion about this here.

Migrate CA server 2008 to 2019 without uninstall existing CA services - Microsoft Q&A

but since as you mentioned a workgroup it may be less impactful.

Thanks. That describes it perfectly.

Glad to hear, you're welcome.
