Large amount of windows update upload traffic

Noticed in my network monitor that several Windows Servers utilized a lot of upload bandwidth for Windows Updates last night, with destination IP's that appear to be content delivery networks associated with Microsoft.  These servers happen to not be pointing to my WSUS server (a separate issue I'll work on).  In the last 7 days, I show 76GB outbound from various machines.  If no WSUS server is specified and servers are getting updates from Microsoft Online, is it normal for them to also upload this amount of windows update traffic?  I'm looking into the Delivery Optimization which are not currently enabled for servers, but I'm hoping someone can chime in with some guidance for servers that do not have an available WSUS server.
