Has anyone had success with running 2 separate domains on one server 2019?

When I attempt to create a new forest, there are no options available. does anyone know of a solution to regain the ability to have 2 forests? (All options are grayed out for adding a second forest in 2019)

@Dave Patrick Thanks for the reply and I know this is a confusing theory, I have a client that im setting up their Primary Domain who (as i have just found out) has 2 separate primary domains (No child domains) and they want both domain controllers to be running from the same Server 2019 install (Cost cutting)

Any ideas how I can run 2 parent domains from one server?

Solution

A single instance of windows domain controller can only be associated with one domain, but you can install hyper-v role only on host, then stand up two virtual machines. One for each domain controller in the separate domains.

@Dave Patrick

That's definitely the best solution, but the client doesn't want to pay for an additional server 2019 licence.

Should not have to. Some general info below;

  • Each host needs to be licensed.
  • A minimum of 8 core licenses is required for each physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licenses is required for each server.
  • Core licenses are sold in packs of two.
  • Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For each additional 1 or 2 VMs, all the physical cores in the server must be licensed again.
  • DataCenter Edition provides rights for unlimited Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed.
  • AVMA keys can be used only when the host is DataCenter edition

@Dave Patrick Okay, Sorry for the constant questions, I'm excited to hear that news! just to clarify, I can have the normal installation OS of server 2019 and still run 2 Hyper-V installations on it with the same licence? Definitely saved me if that is the answer and I starting the preparation for the Hyper-V install now.

Also, My licence is the STD 19 X64 1PK DSP

Thank you @Dave Patrick, You've really honestly saved me in this situation.

Yes, in general.

  • Standard Edition provides rights for up to 2 Operating System Environments or Windows Servers containers with Hyper-V isolation when all physical cores in the server are licensed. For each additional 1 or 2 VMs (when no other roles / applications have been added to host)

I wouldn't know what  "STD 19 X64 1PK DSP"  means but your reseller's trained licensing specialist would have that information.
