This post was co-authored by John Wilcox (Windows as a Service Evangelist, Windows Servicing & Delivery), Alec Oot (Principal Program Manager Lead, Windows Servicing & Delivery), and Will Patton (Senior Program Manager, Windows Servicing & Delivery)

In recent blogs by John Cable and myself, we shared how Windows 10, version 1909 (referred to internally as 19H2) will continue our efforts to improve the overall update experience for consumers and businesses. In this post, we are sharing more detail about the mechanics that will be used to provide those improvements.

Before we describe what’s new, however, we want to clarify that if a device is running any version of Windows 10 earlier than version 1903, the process of updating to version 1909 will be the same as previous feature updates. This applies to devices managed with Windows Update or Windows Update for Business, or devices self-managed with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Configuration Manager, or other management tool. Again, for devices running Windows 10, version 1809 and previous, there is nothing new with the update process to version 1909.

What’s new about delivering Windows 10, version 1909

Devices running Windows 10, version 1903 can take advantage of a new way of servicing that leverages the same servicing technology used to deliver monthly quality updates to get the new features and capabilities available in version 1909. This enables you to install the update to Windows 10, version 1909 with an improved update experience and reduced downtime.

Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. As a result, the new features in Windows 10, version 1909 were included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 1903 (released October 8, 2019), but are currently in a dormant/disabled state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on via an “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that simply activates the Windows 10, version 1909 features.

The enablement package is a great option for installing a scoped feature update like Windows 10, version 1909 as it allows you to update from version 1903 to version 1909 with a single restart, reducing update downtime and, thus, enabling you to take advantage of new features right away. Additionally, since Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common baseline, applications and drivers that worked with version 1903 are designed to work as-is with version 1909, just like any Windows 10 quality update.

How to get Windows 10, version 1909

As stated above, if your device is running any version of Windows 10 earlier than version 1903, there are no changes to how you install Windows 10, version 1909. If your devices are running Windows 10, version 1903, here is guidance on how to update to Windows 10, version 1909.

For devices managed by Windows Update

If you receive updates directly from Windows Update, the Windows 10, version 1909 update will be presented just like any feature update. The installation process will be faster, but, as with any feature update, you will have the ability to choose when to install version 1909 using the controls that we announced earlier this year.

If you are using Windows Update for Business, you will receive the Windows 10, version 1909 update in the same way as prior feature updates and as defined by your feature update deferral policy. Windows will automatically choose the right path and will update devices already running Windows 10, version 1903 to Windows 10, version 1909 using the enablement package.

For self-managed devices

All of the existing options you use to deploy feature updates are supported with Windows 10, version 1909, and update media is (or will soon be) available in all of the normal channels (for more detailed information on timing, please see the Windows IT Pro blog). Note that installing Windows 10, version 1909 via media does not provide the time savings and reduced restarts available when upgrading from version 1903 to version 1909 using the enablement package.

We are making the Windows 10, version 1909 enablement package available on WSUS as KB4517245, which can be deployed on existing deployments of Windows 10, version 1903.

Additional details

Versioning

You can verify that the Windows 10, version 1909 update was successful by running Winver, versioning APIs, WMI, and other common interfaces, and verifying that the operating system build number is 18363. Because of the common baseline, even after installing Windows 10, version 1909, individual system file versions will still appear as 18362.

Disk space

If you choose to keep your devices on Windows 10, version 1903, the disk-space overhead of the dormant/disabled features that are part of the common monthly update is less than 25 MB. Again, those features will remain dormant/disabled until the Windows 10, version 1909 enablement package is used.

Uninstall

If you do need to uninstall Windows 10, version 1909, open your Windows Update settings (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history), select Uninstall updates, and uninstall the Feature Update to Windows 10 version 1909 via Enablement Package (KB4517245). This will revert the device to Windows 10, version 1903. This is a separate path from the Recovery tab, which uninstalls the most recent non-servicing-based feature update.

Windows Server

Windows Server instances will continue to receive Windows Server, version 1903 monthly quality updates. The feature enablement package will not be automatically offered to Windows Server by Windows Update, nor will it be available in the Microsoft Update Catalog or via WSUS. Instead, refreshed update media will soon be made available for updating to Windows Server, version 1909.

30 months of support

We want to conclude this post with a quick reminder. Devices running Windows 10, version 1903 receive 18 months of support. Devices running the Enterprise, IoT Enterprise, or Education editions of Windows 10, version 1909 receive 30 months of support. For more information about the Windows servicing lifecycle, please see the Windows lifecycle fact sheet.

I Cannot but agree, it seems that Microsoft has missed the mark this time.

fortunately I make backups before every so called update.

@DLStoehnerWhat is the mess exactly?

Windows updates are cumulative packages, you only install 1 and that's it.

it's not like Windows 7 era where you had to install 966451 updates after you fresh install Windows.

Copper Contributor

HotCakeX - I just installed 1909 on several machines and then downloaded the Cumulative Update that you mention. I was in the process of installing the update and most of them failed. So, I re-downloaded the update. Tried again. Still had failures to install. Left them for several days and tried again. Most went - some needed more time. So "Yes" it is a mess.

I live in the southern part of the state of New Mexico. Our hi speed broadband is not as high as we would like. And some of our schools are still running 100 mb links. What a mouth full...

@DLStoehnerI deal with 10mb links so no need to talk about slow speeds with me ;)

what is the error you are getting? post screenshot?

Copper Contributor

Well... that was a month or 6 weeks back. So, no I don't have screen shots or error codes. Just frustration at the time. I left machines updating overnight. Some took - some didn't. Tried a second and a third time. Machines are updated now. A couple of them, I just wiped and performed a fresh install.

@John Wilcox

I have about 1000 Windows 10 devices (all Dell; mix of laptops and desktops) using CfgMgr.  All are on 1809 with a handful still on 1803/1709.  Attempting to upgrade to 1909.  I'm NOT using the 1909 Enablement update (as that only applies to 1903 devices) but the full 1909 Feature Update.  Downloaded the FU and then deployed it to a test collection.  40 mins later, I go into Monitoring > Deployments and the machine (still on 1809) says "Compliant".  The 1909 FU didn't install.  Why?  How do I fix this?

Copper Contributor

I'll say it again... Some machines I tried 3 times to install 1909 before it finally took??? Don't know why...

it finally took? what you mean..?

Copper Contributor

something like this: 1909 install - fail; 1909 install -fail; 1909 install -success

That's what I mean....

Copper Contributor

Something seems to be very wrong.

I blocked the update after my earlier troubles. Yesterday I retried and the same problem occurred, at restarting it took long before I got back into the 'temporary' user environment. My Eufi settings, multi boot options was F###d up again.

It resides on the hidden FAT32 system drive/partition

I think I have to manually recreat it, as the backup does not work either.

What are the 'Well esteemed' engineers cooking up?

@John Wilcox

when will Windows 10 version 1909 be declared ready for broad deployment?

Copper Contributor

Heya. I have an Alienware Aurora R3 PC which I cannot “restart” for this latest Windows update. I can only shut down, resulting in failure after the second leg. A restart will completely crash this particular workstation (believe me, just getting 10Pro loaded was a nightmare of biblical proportions). How can I upgrade with a “Shut Down and Update” option versus restart? Trust me when I say the restart option will permanently crash this system that is my lifeblood, and Alienware offers no support for Win10 on the R3.

Thanks much!

Sounds Good!!!

So, I see above it says "Again, for devices running Windows 10, version 1809 and previous, there is nothing new with the update process to version 1909."

My ISO is 1809, am I just stuck there or is there an upgrade path to get me to 1909 from 1809?

Silver Contributor

What do you mean by "My ISO"? To update from 1809 to 1909 you just press Download and install in the Windows Update window in the Settings or it is provided automatically. That is, if there is no some incompatibility issue and it is not provided for your PC for some reason.

Brass Contributor

My ISO name is SW_DVD9_Win_Server_STD_CORE_2019_64Bit_English_DC_STD_MLF_X21-96581.ISO, which is 1809 when looking at properties of the OS after its done being built.

Reading this article,

Has enlightened me to the fact that my 1809 LTSC cannot be upgraded to 1909 SAC.

I get an error in trying to install the (2020-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4551762).

Failure code 0x800f0922

Can Anyone advise,pls?

Thanks

@stommc

Hi, kindly have a look at this:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/install-update-error-0x800f0922/...

also another possibility:

The system reserved partition is created during Windows installation and has a fixed drive space of 500MB in Windows 10, which contains the Boot Manager, Boot Configuration Data (both responsible for booting Windows 10), and the startup files.

If there is not enough free space in the system reserved partition, it will lead to Windows update failure with error code 0x800f0922.

My PC is running on Windows 10 version 1909. The update feature keeps on trying to update the PC with Cumulative update KB4549951. However, it fails everytime saying "Windows could not finish updates". I have tried fixing the issue using RESETWUEng and everything else on Microsoft website. Nothing has worked till now. Can anyone help?

Copper Contributor

I just got the update to 1909 and now every time I view my personalized background, it fades. I tried turning off the transparency effects, did a restart, and then I got a black background. I changed it back, but the background still fades. How do I fix this? Also, my start button does not work the same, there is a 'start' option at the very top of the left panel that does not seem to do anything...

Copper Contributor

I updated from 1903 to 1909 because my windows update wasn't working properly, unfortunately it hasn't cured the problem.  When I check for updates I get this error "There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070422)"  It doesn't matter how many times I try it's always the same.

I have googled that code and have tried a number of suggestions which involved typing commands into an elevated dos prompt but none of them have worked.

Please can somebody help me to cure this problem.

Thanks

I think MS should consider closing this post. It has became a go to place to complain about various Windows update issues, when it was a post about 1909 deployment options.. This is not a support forum.

Hola!!

Saludos!!

How can I revert the change?  Cannot open my Office Apps anymore wwlib.dll error on Excel Word and all MS OFFICE apps.

Seems Microsoft wants everyone to subscribe to OFFICE 365 and pay monthly.

Copper Contributor

This whole software as a service is a racket.  Updates always failing to install, drivers updating to incorrect versions, ADVERTISEMENTS on my start menu.  BLOATWARE I DO NOT WANT OR NEED (Edge, Cortana, People, X Box just to name a few)!   >: -(

I've been giving WinX a fair chance for the past 6 months.  But I'm going back to Windows 7 until I get to decide what is best for my hardware.

WinX is nothing but ridiculous spyware.

This update wiped all my Custom Tags in OneNote with no way to recover?  I am also noticing other weird things that somehow changed...but the OneNote Custom Tags disappearing is a big one.....

Copper Contributor

I just went through a Windows 10 situation on a new HP Mobile Workstation 17G6 with the OEM  Windows 10 version of 1809 being problematic after updates, when getting "locked up" when attempting to move to update 1909. After numerous hard drive re-formats and reloading, the problem seemed to be associated with the Samsung 970 Pro M.2 SSD drivers and Samsung Magician performance drive software.  Once I went through the initial loading process without the Samsung drivers, all I had to do was switch back and forth a few update advance tab settings to "kick start" the 1809 updates that were "hanging up" at the "ready to install phase. Update 1909 was a bit "quercky" with loading, processing, reloading, but finally initialized and fully loaded.  My idea with this high end laptop was to be a true desktop replacement with 2 - Samsung 970 Pro M.2 SSD 1TB hard drives, and a 3rd Samsung 2TB SATA SSD drive that can be run in "Rapid Mode" using the Samsung Magician software to have the similar high Read / Write speeds as the M.2 PCIe drives - using additional computer resources.

I hope this helps...now I can load in the rest of what I need to...

I was installing WINDOWS 10 version 1909 this evening, May 26, 2020.  The install was 93% complete when I accidently closed the Tab that was providing me with the status of the install.  Several minutes later, I went to bring the WINDOWS Assistant back up, but received the following message: "WINDOWS Assistant is currently running."

Does anyone know if that message means that my update is still running, and will eventually reach 100%?  Could it mean that WINDOWS Assistant is running, however, the download stopped when I closed the Tab?

Is there by any chance a download link still available for 1909?  https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799445 tries to install 2004, and ultimatley fails.

Copper Contributor

i am still trying to update from 1803 ,keep getting an error code

Brass Contributor

@bahawk

What method are you trying to update with?

Copper Contributor

@Johnwilc

I am trying to deploy with a script in Connectwise Automate that directs the endpoint to https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799445 in order to download and install the update.  That link attempts to download and install version 2004.  I want 1909.  Hoping there is a different link for 1909 that I can modify the script with.

Brass Contributor

@bahawk

I'm not familiar with that tool , sorry. Suggest you check with them,  or perhaps simpler at this point,  you can just use the Media Creation Tool

Copper Contributor

@Johnwilc

The tool is not important.  The script is not important.  I can point the script at any link.  I just need to know if there is a link available specifically for 1909.  I believe the media creation tool will download 2004.
