Getting to know the Windows update history pages

At Microsoft, our vision for transparency is what drives us to create extensive documentation for every audience. We believe our documentation should reflect the needs of our customers and range from “get started” guides for our various products and solutions to guidance around specific issues that customers may encounter—for example, when updating Windows devices to solve stability issues and protect against the latest security vulnerabilities. While we’ve talked about the guiding principles for monthly Windows 10 quality updates, it’s important to know that we have specific documentation on what is included in each of those updates and why and how you should install them.

That documentation can be found on the Windows 10 update history page. Despite what the name suggests, the update history page is not a single page, but rather a collection of pages, one for every Windows update we release. Each page offers detailed information about each update, such as the type of update, which operating system versions it affects, improvements and fixes and how to get the update.

Whether you are an IT pro responsible for your organization, or a consumer working with your personal device, we recommend that you bookmark the Windows 10 update history page as there you’ll be able to:

  • Learn about the latest improvements and fixes included in the update.
  • See if an update resolves an issue that may have affected your experience.
  • Understand why your device isn’t receiving the latest and greatest Windows update.
  • Find out proactively if there are known issues associated with an update and see if there is a workaround and timing for resolution.

Using the Windows 10 update history page

Finding the Windows 10 update history page is easy. You can bookmark the direct link to the page, or search for “Windows 10 update history page” on the web.

When you first arrive on the Update History page, you will see a view much like this:

To find the “home” page for a specific version of Windows (e.g. Windows 10, version 1809 and Windows Server 2019), look at the list located on the top left. If you’re looking for details about that feature update, you can skip the rest of the steps; you’re where you need to be. If you’re looking for information about a specific quality update; however, simply select the desired update from the bottom left.

Windows 10 version “home” pages

Beginning with Windows 10, version 1809, we incorporated active tracking of known issues into the Windows 10 update history “home” page for each version. This information includes:

  • Compatibility blocks. Certain hardware configurations may inhibit a successful upgrade due to compatibility issues which must be resolved.
  • Issues under investigation. Whenever open issues change, or new issues are identified, they can be found here along with their current status

These pages also contain notices, pointers to product roadmaps, FAQs, and other relevant information regarding other Microsoft products, such as Surface or Office 365.

Monthly quality update pages (aka “release notes”)

The monthly quality update pages, or “release notes” for short, contain information pertaining to the content of each quality updates, including:

  • Improvements and fixes. While not an exhaustive list (as each update can often include more than 100 fixes), you’ll find information on fixes that solve high impact issues.
  • Known issues. When there is an issue that may impact users should they install an update, we offer details on these issues to help you determine whether it’s in your best interest to install the update or wait for the update containing a fix.
  • How to get the update. We link to the installation packages from the Microsoft Update Catalog and offer relevant information about installation as well as a link to a list of all altered files in that update.

History of the Windows update history page

Prior to our decision to provide Windows as a service, updates came in the form of a single patch solving a single problem. While this model allowed administrators to pick and choose which problems to solve and, therefore, prioritize testing more relevant patches, it resulted in a growing divide between the devices we tested internally (which had all of the latest patches installed) and the device used by our customers (which had a variety of patches installed or not installed). This fragmentation leaked into our documentation. Each individual patch had its own Knowledge Base (KB) article, creating a large quantity of patch-related pages and making it difficult to find the KB article for a specific patch. With the implementation of Windows as a service, we have been able deliver a single article covering all fixes and improvements in a given update, reducing redundancy and making it far easier for you to find and search for the information you need.

After the first few cumulative updates for Windows 10, we received positive feedback on consolidating the information we offer around updates and made the decision to bring our learnings to legacy operating systems. We started by creating Security-only Updates and Previews of Monthly Rollups for Windows 7, utilizing a similar packaging method to that used for Windows 10. This allowed us to, in turn, vastly simplify our documentation and eventually create an update history page for each currently supported version of the Windows operating system:

Little known facts about the Windows update history pages

Now for a few interesting facts:

  • The Windows Update history documentation is localized in 36 languages, and garners extensive use: the Windows 10, version 1809 page alone presently has over 1 million-page views and counting!
  • On average, Microsoft releases 58 new or updated articles a month for the Windows platforms. We coordinate with other Microsoft teams to share best practices that will help ensure that the information we provide is accurate and consistent for our customers.
  • Users can provide feedback on the update history pages and Microsoft will take action on that feedback.

Further, it allows us to pass along this feedback directly to our engineering and customer support teams such that they can use this information in their planning processes, and to improve your experiences with future updates and versions of Windows.

RE: Monthly quality update pages (aka “release notes”)

 

These updates tend to get re-released once or twice during a month, but you publish neither the history of the update, nor the reasons for its re-release.

 

For example, KB4469342 is showing December 5. It's the last release date, but this a November cumulative update released on November 13, then again on November 28, and then again on December 5. So you pushed it three times, but the KB article neglects to mention any release history.

the history is an amazing improvement for anyone that is involved in patch management. Keep up the good work. Imho the connection between known issues and fixes should be linked more. this might include to update older patch notes.

Vadim Sterkin's comment is well taken. In fact, the KB article he mentions was updated again on Jan. 4. 

 

Each release note should have a full, detailed revision history at the bottom. If a patch is re-released in the Update Catalog, the event should be mentioned in the release notes -- even if it's "just" a metadata change.

 

The recent trend to officially acknowledge major bugs is like a breath of fresh air. It'd be nice if you covered less-publicized bugs, and if you linked to discussions on, e.g., the Answers Forum or Technet.

So, you are listening? Actively? Well, here is something I originally wanted to publish in my blog. I eventually decided that my audience has no interest in reading it; they already believe in every word of it. Microsoft, however, can definitely take advantage of it.

The crazy update-related terminology

Microsoft has a whole weird set of standard update terminology that defy common sense.

  • A "security update" is a "fix for a product-specific, security-related vulnerability". But, a "security-only update" is "an update that collects all the new security updates for a given month and for a given product"! So, if it called "security update", it fixes one issue; if it is called "security-only update", it fixes several issues.
  • An "update" in Microsoft terminology is what a sane person would call a "non-security update". A "monthly rollup" is a collection of those (non-security) "updates".

Their Windows as a Service (WaaS) page introduces a couple more non-standard ones.

  • A "feature update" contains a full installation image for a new version of Windows 10. Microsoft says "these will add new features to Windows 10, delivered in bite-sized chunks compared to the previous practice of Windows releases every 3-5 years." But we all know that half of this claim is untrue. The size of a feature update is exactly the same as the size of a full Windows OS. There is nothing bite-sized about feature updates. They are massive, at least 4 GB in size.
  • A "quality update" delivers both security and non-security fixes. It appears the terms "update" and "quality update" have switched definitions. Until Windows 10 v1809, these updates were also as massive as 1 GB in size, surpassing the size of the biggest service pack the Microsoft had ever released. Starting with Windows 10 v1809, they are almost 1/10th in size.

But Microsoft recurrently violates said guideline with even crazier inventions. For example:

  • The KB4480970 package is distributed under the title of "2019-01 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework […]". It's Microsoft Support article has a similar title. So, here Microsoft has used the word "Quality" to indicate this package has non-security fixes too. They cannot call it "2019-01 Monthly Rollup for .NET Framework" because, per their crazy standard terminology, a "monthly rollup" does not contain security fixes. But per WaaS terminology, "Quality" is enough here and "Security" is redundant.
  • The KB4480970 package is distributed under the title of "2019-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows […]". "Security Monthly Quality" is awfully non-English. So, what does it mean? Did they intend to mean something similar to the above, i.e. "2019-01 Monthly Security and Quality Rollup for Windows"? The associated Microsoft Support article seems to suggest otherwise: It is titled "January 8, 2019—KB4480970 (Monthly Rollup)" indicating that this update is strictly non-security and the words "Security" and "Quality" are misleading and erroneous.
  • The KB4480960 package is distributed under the title of "2019-01 Security Only Quality Update for Windows […]". It is as non-English as the former, but which word is redundant this time? The associated Microsoft Support article is titled "January 8, 2019—KB4480960 (Security-only update)", indicating that this time, only the word "Quality" is redundant.

Let's review what we saw above: In one case, the words "Security" was redundant. In another, both were typographic errors. In the last, only the "Quality" term was put there in error. So, basically, Microsoft has trapped itself in such a tangle of non-English terms that it cannot possibly use them according to its own definitions.

Now, let's look at a noble form of violation: The KB4480965 package is distributed under the title of "2019-01 Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer". (Please notice the natural English capitalization too!) Under Microsoft's official but crazy guideline, it must have been called "2019-01 Security-Only Update for Internet Explorer". (Yes, I checked, "security-only updates" are cumulative.) But do I complain? No. This is an example of what Microsoft must have done.

I might publish it as a part of a blog post in the future though.

Concerning: "The Windows Update history documentation is localized in 36 languages" - while I appreciate that approach, I need to say - a) foreign language versions (I can speak for the German version) has been often outdated in the past - and the machine translation has often a worse quality.

 

If I need accurate and up to date information about patches, I'm visiting the English version of Windows update history page.

Please do include servicing stack updates in these pages. Without knowing an exact servicing stack update, one will be failed to install cumulative updates by using original installation media.

I'm often called upon to troubleshoot OEM versions of Windows 8.0 > customers are not interested in upgrading beyond Windows 8.1.  Is there any consideration for providing  an update history page for Windows 8.0?

@szavala 8.0 is out of support for long. Unfortunately they did not do the same with Server 2012 to avoid flak. 

maybe you can invite me into a meeting with your customer to talk about why they hesistate to go to 8.1 which is still a free offer or upgrading from 8.1 to 10 at a later time. from a security standpoint 8.0 is even more insecure than Win7.
