In the image above the search box and News and Interests are a single component, not two. The images represent possible display choices, and of course there would also be an option to hide either one or the other or both.
And when the component is clicked it displays a mixture of the two. I imagined something like this just to exemplify, but the design options are numerous:

Inspired by @HotCakeX's suggestion:
"I would rather have news and interest as a tab i can switch to when I press the search button, so not shown by default every time i click on search button. then I also think they kinda would need to change the icon and name of search to something else, like Hub. there are simply too many options and features in that which goes beyond just "search" :)
