Windows 11 Unsupported on I7-7700

Copper Contributor

Why doesn't Microsoft Support the intel Core i7-7700 Processor for Windows 11 (22H2), I was checking the PC Health Check App and It said that I met the Requirements for Everything Else, Except for the Processor. I have a TPM 2.0, but an Unsupported Processor. I found this quite ridiculous. No hate to Microsoft or anything like that but I feel like the I7-7700 would work just fine on Windows 11 (22H2), Because I upgraded on an Unsupported Processor and It was smooth as butter. then I went back to Windows 10 Because My Processor was Unsupported. If possible, could Microsoft make a change? What are your thoughts?

Hello,

Unfortunately, i7-7700 processor is not compatible for Windows 11, according to Microsoft.

Please check with official Windows 11 list of supported processors:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-11-supported-inte...

As per Microsoft:

Installing Windows 11 on PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won't be entitled to receive updates.

Read more here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/installing-windows-11-on-devices-that-don-t-meet-minimum....

Again, as Microsoft,

Devices that do not meet the minimum system requirements had 52% more kernel mode crashes. Devices that do meet the minimum system requirements had a 99.8% crash free experience.

You can drop a feedback to Microsoft about this, using Feedback hub app.

Regards.
What about the other 0.2%?
I have a computer that is a i7 from the 6th generation and it works fine!
Not true!

..from compatible processor page (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-10-22h2-supporte...)

Windows 10 22H2 Supported Intel Processors

this is a copy/paste:

Intel® Core™ i7-7700
Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ
Intel® Core™ i7-7700K
Intel® Core™ i7-7700T
Intel® Core™ i7-7740X

How is it NOT compatible, when it says it is?

You're looking at windows 10, not 11

@KapilArya This is just not fair you know the i7-7700 is a really good CPU it works smooth on windows 11 So cant you fix that make it a supported CPU please.

You can surely drop a feedback to Windows engineering team using Feedback hub app.
Windows 11 will actually work on a lot of older CPUs, but every time there's an annual feature update you'll have to clean install as it will refuse to install it as an update. And no guarantee that normal updates won't break it either (although so far as I know none have done so yet),

The chances of Microsoft officially supporting earlier processors now is somewhere close to zero - they didn't back down despite all the criticism when W11 was first release, so there's no reason why they would do so several years on.
simply put, it is all about money. They want to force a good number of people to buy new hardware. Most of the people I know who are in this position pretty much are going to retire out and rely on their smart phones to do things rather than cave to this rob your wallet mentality.

@KapilArya So systems that meet the requirements are 99.8% crash free, and systems that don't experience 52% more crashes, meaning the systems that don't meet requirements are 99.7% crash free?  My processor can run anything under the sun, yet Microsoft wants to tell me Windows 11 can't be run on it, even though it has been proven to work.  Yes there are workarounds to install it, but I will then have an unsupported system.  Thanks Microsoft for the great user experience.

Yes, in theory - but there are no guarantees that an update won't break it at some point!

@tivbross So my choices are to have an unsupported Windows 10 system, an unsupported Windows 11 system, buy a new motherboard, processor, and power supply, or just throw a perfectly good working system that cost $2000+ in the trash and start from scratch.  Thanks Microsoft.

@iiTrx

My processor is fast enough to do anything I want and it has 48 gig of ram and TPM.  This is just one more reason to switch to linux or Apple OS and dump Microsoft.

Apple is worse - they only support the latest OSs on a specified list of hardware, and each version normally gets 3 years of support. In practice, this normally works out as computers dropping out of support commpletely about 8 years after the model was released (an actual machine might of course be newer than that, as it depends on release date of the model).

WIndows 11 is the first time Microsoft has pulled a similar stunt. Let's hope it's the last!

@DavidYorkshire

Thanks David. I believe it is time to move to Linux after being a Microsoft customer since the Early DOS days.  I really do not appreciate built in obsolescence.

I don't get it. My core I7-7700 is STILL the fastest computer in my house and the other computers are newer. Makes NO sense.
