Windows 11 Explorer: can't order quick access items in the left pane

Brass Contributor

I can't reorder the quick access items in the right pane of the windows explorer through drag and drop. It's weird, because if i drag and drop one of them to the top, it works, but if i want to place an item in the middle of the list it doesn't work.

It works for me! Thank You !

I agree. This is absolutely rediculous! New versions are supposed to improve features and functionality, not take away useful and valuable features.

Move to the Folder Options and tick one of those options under Navigation pane ! hit Ok, reorder and then go back and untick. That's it
Thanks. This worked for me.

@GeekForLife I keep forgetting this too as I use it so infrequently.  One has to do their reordering from the left panel of the File Explorer dialog, not the right panel.

@bbran24  yes, it has to be done from the left pane, but it doesn't work here either, unless you unselect "show all folders" first.

@SKKMom thanks, and agreed I was assuming that that show all folders being unchecked was a given when I passed on about the left pane

Same problem still exists with Windows 11 Pro 23H2!! Any new fix available?
Have you tried unselecting "show all folders" option before attempting to re-order folders in the left side pane?
This trick worked for me, thank you!
One of the straightforward methods is to use the context menu. Right-click on the folder you want to add or reorder, and select “Pin to Quick Access.”
Changing navigator options, on or off, any combination, does not work for me. This is not about pinned items but about the top-level nodes including 'Home' which are not movable (even though a bar appears when trying to move it). 'Home' is not at the top in my navigator, a 3rd party app is. I just want to put 'Home' back on top.
Try left clicking and holding the folder and press the escape key. Release the left click then release the escape key.

@Tomimys if I followed what you wrote, it didn't really do anything.

Didn't work for me either. What DOES work for me is to go to Options/ View/ Navigation Pane and untick "Show All Folders." Rearrange folders in left pane. Go back re-tick "Show All Folders."
Ya that's what I've been doing since Nov '22 when I saw njerisanyu's post of a stumbled on solution. I just wanted to try the above. Probably shouldn't have bothered.
I don't have this issue any more when installing a new system update.
That's great news! Maybe Windows developers are working on this issue. However, I just installed the latest update last night, and the issue still exists for me this morning. Glad I have discovered the hack.
What version of Windows 11 are you on? I'm on 23H2 (Home) and the issue is still present w/o the hack.
