USB drive always write protected

Copper Contributor

After reinstalling my OS, I encountered an issue where every USB stick and even one external hard drive became write-protected. Strangely, I could format them without any problem, but whenever I tried to download something onto them, I received the message: “The disk is write protected, remove the write-protection or use another disk.”

I tried cleaning attributes in Diskpart and used a hard disk low-level format application, and while the formatting process seemed to go smoothly, the drives remained unusable.

Open Registry Editor.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\RemovableStorageDevices\{53f5630d-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}.
In the right pane, change Deny_Write from 1 to 0.
Close Registry Editor, and reboot.

Note: If you're new to registry editing, create System Restore point first.
