Screen Mirroring (wireless casting) on TV stopped working

Copper Contributor

Hello, for the last month or so wireless casting (Windows key + K) on our Samsung TV stopped working with all our Windows 11 laptops (we have 70). However, it's still working with a Windows 10 laptop that isn't connected to our domain...it's also working with Apple Airplay so the issue is not the TV. (I did a factory reset on the TV just to make sure anyway).

Whenever we try to connect a Windows 11 laptop, we can approve the connection on the TV and it tries to connect for like 10 seconds but ultimately it fails and says that it can't connect (yes it's on the same WIFI network.)

I don't know why it suddenly stopped working, we haven't changed any policy recently. Could it be a Windows update? Does anyone have any idea?

@BMERCIER45 any update on this? I bought a windows 11 laptop in febuary and the casting has never worked and didnt know this was a new issue. It does exactly like you desceibed, tries to connect but fails. Also on a samsung tv.

@Perpersupportme No update and it's really hard to get an answer from Microsoft.

Several of the latest windows updates have blocked my ability to cast (to Chormecast built into Android TV) since the start of this month! I've uninstalled all those I could do, but the latest cumulative update (KB5036893) has once again blocked ALL casting for me and this one cannot be uninstalled. @Deleted @Deleted  what is being done about this as people are obviously having issues and so far there is no resolution or even from what I can see and acknowledgement that (once again) your update has stopped a feature (or several!!) from working?

@Beasley_Gary same problem for me, Windows 11 used to mirror to my Samsung TV just fine every time without issue. After some updates earlier this year it's completely broken all casting

Any plans to fix this @Deleted?

It sounds like your issue with wireless casting on Windows 11 laptops could indeed be related to a recent Windows update or a network setting. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that all Windows 11 laptops are fully updated. Sometimes, new updates might fix existing issues.

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates.
  2. Rollback Recent Updates: If the problem started recently, it might be due to a recent update. Try rolling back the latest update on one of the laptops to see if it resolves the issue.

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and choose the latest one to uninstall.
  3. Network Configuration: Since all laptops are on the same Wi-Fi network, ensure there are no network policies or firewall settings that could be blocking the connection.

    • Check your network’s firewall settings and any domain policies that might affect network discovery or casting.
  4. Update Wireless Drivers: Ensure the wireless drivers on all Windows 11 laptops are up to date.

    • Open Device Manager, find the wireless adapter, right-click, and select Update driver.
  5. Windows Features: Ensure that the necessary Windows features for screen mirroring are enabled.

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Optional features and ensure that "Wireless Display" is installed.
  6. Reset Network Settings: Try resetting the network settings on one of the Windows 11 laptops.

    • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.
  7. Troubleshoot Network Adapter: Use the built-in troubleshooter to identify and fix network-related issues.

    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Network Adapter.
  8. Check Group Policies: If the laptops are part of a domain, ensure that no group policies are interfering with the casting functionality.

    • Open Group Policy Editor and review policies related to wireless display and network sharing.
  9. Re-enable Wireless Display: Disable and then re-enable the wireless display feature on one of the Windows 11 laptops.

    • Go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Wireless display or dock.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it might be worth reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance or checking the Microsoft community forums for any similar issues reported by other users.
