Forgot Windows 11 admin password, what to do?

Copper Contributor

Hi everyone,

I am unable to get into Windows 11 desktop because it says my password is expired and I can't set a new password for it. Whenever I input the original admin password, it tells me this password is not correct.

This PC is loaded with the latest Windows 11 update. What should I do to recover or reset the password so I can access my files.

Update: I managed to reset my Windows 11 admin password by following this online tutorial.

Is your PC part of the domain or company network?
Are you using Local Account or Microsoft Account?
Have a look at:

@Reza_AmeriIt is my home pc using a local account for login. thanks

Have you followed the link which I shared earlier?
Do you have any other administrator account?

the codeing isn't properly  canceling out  properly. The proper canceling codeing for that software is (1291290).

First go to settings then security, then reset, and it will take you to bios, and reset computer make sure to make backup of your files. So you can restore after.
For the local account, you may have a look at:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/reset-your-windows-local-account-password-86912508-e584-...
Unless you use password hint, or remember your password, there is not much we could do.
You might need to format and reinstall the Windows.

@Reza_Ameri  this does not work as there is no security question added to the account.

In case you don't have any other account, or password or recovery USB, you should reinstall the Windows.

@Reza_Ameri This will delete everything on my PC?

Hello andrewson,

If you forgot or lost your password for Windows 11 admin password, you might be able to change or reset it. You can follow the below ways to reset the password and access your files.

You will need to use the following URL: https://account.live.com/ResetPassword.aspx and follow the instructions to reset the Microsoft account password. Here, you can use your email or phone number details to reset the Windows 11 admin password successfully.

Reset Windows 11 admin password from Login Screen:

  • Firstly, click on the I forgot my password option to start the Microsoft account password reset process.
  • Now, Enter your mobile number or email ID to get the code and verify your identity.
  • Then, click the Next button after entering the security code from your email.
  • Next, enter the last four digits of your mobile number and click on the Get Code button.
  • Now, enter the security code to continue with the Microsoft account reset option.
  • Lastly, enter the new password and then log in to Windows 11 with a new password.

If the above workarounds don't help you to reset the Windows 11 Admin password, you can try the below methods,

  1. Reset your password using a Password Reset Disk
  2. Create a bootable Windows disk on a flash drive

The above-given workarounds will help you in resetting your password.

I hope the information above helps you to reset your Windows 11 Admin password without facing any issues.

I feel your pain! Dealing with forgotten passwords is always a headache, especially on Windows 11. So, you're saying your password expired? That's a new one for me, but hey, Windows likes to keep us on our toes, right? Try these solutions:

Use Security Questions: Sometimes, Windows will ask you to set up security questions when you create your account. If you did that, you can answer those questions to reset your password. It's like a secret backdoor!

Password Reset Disk:  If you've previously created a password reset disk (which, let's be honest, most of us haven't), you can use it to reset your password.

Professional Software: There are a bunch of commercial software options available that can help you recover or reset your password. Some are better than others, like iSeepassword Windows password recovery pro, WinGeeker, and they typically cost a bit. I think this is best and fastest way to remove or reset your forgotten Windows password.

Microsoft Account: If you're using a Microsoft account to log in (which is pretty common), you can try resetting your password online. Just go to the Microsoft account recovery page on another device, follow the steps, and you might be able to set a new password.

Reinstall Windows: If everything else fails and you just can't get in, you might need to consider reinstalling Windows. But, this means you'll lose all the data on your system partition. So this should be your last resort. If your files are super important, consider taking your PC to a tech expert or data recovery specialist first.

Remember, these steps can be a bit tricky, especially if you're not super tech-savvy. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, it might be a good idea to get some tech-savvy friend or professional to help you out. And, in the future, maybe jot down that password somewhere safe – we've all been there! Good luck! :four_leaf_clover:

Correct, the format will remove everything.
