Can I listen to music on Spotify on airplane mode?

Copper Contributor

Hi everyone,

I often find myself in situations where I'm without an internet connection, like when I'm on a plane. I love listening to Spotify on my phone and Windows 11 PC, but I’m not sure how to do it in airplane mode. I don't have Spotify Premium, but I’ve heard there might be workarounds or other tools that could help.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can listen to music on Spotify on airplane mode? Any input could be greatly appreciated.

You need a Spotify Premium account to download music for offline listening. The free version of Spotify does not allow downloading songs, so you won't be able to listen to music on Spotify on airplane mode as Internet connection is required.

Spotify has a feature called "Offline Mode" that allows you to download music for offline playback. In this way you can listen music Spotify on airplane mode. Here's how:

  1. Open the Spotify app on your Windows 11 PC or phone.
  2. Make sure you're connected to the internet.
  3. Search for the music you want to listen to offline.
  4. Click the "..." three dots next to the song or album title.
  5. Select "Download" from the dropdown menu.
  6. The music will be downloaded and saved for offline playback.

@Demetriumki You must download the music to your device before enabling airplane mode. Once downloaded, you can access your offline music library and listen to it without an internet connection.

Ensure that Spotify is in Offline Mode when you're in airplane mode. This prevents the app from attempting to connect to the internet and allows it to play only the downloaded content.

If you meet these conditions, you can listen to Spotify on airplane mode without any issues in Windows 11.

You'd like to listen to Spotify music on airplane mode? You can create a playlist and add songs to it. Then, download the playlist for offline playback. This way, you can access your favorite songs without having to download each one separately.

@DemetriumkiMost importantly, you should have a Spotify Premium account as only Premium users can download music for offline listening.

Open Spotify and go to the playlist, album, or podcast you want to listen to offline.Toggle the "Download" button (a downward arrow) to start downloading the content to your device. Once the download is complete, go to "Settings" (tap the gear icon).

Scroll down and toggle the "Offline" mode switch on .Now, you can listen to the downloaded music in airplane mode without needing an internet connection.

@Demetriumki If you have a smartwatch or another device capable of storing music offline, sync your downloaded Spotify tracks to this device.  On your primary device, switch to airplane mode.If you're using a synced device like a smartwatch, switch it to airplane mode as well . Listen to music on Spotify on airplane mode from the synced device, even without your phone or internet connection.

@Demetriumki  When you board the plane, simply turn on Airplane Mode from your device’s settings.
Spotify will automatically switch to Offline Mode, allowing you to listen to the downloaded music without needing to manually toggle the Offline Mode in Spotify settings. However, you should have a Premium account with Spotify. In addition, you can't play the downloaded songs on other devices as it is saved as ogg audio format other than the common MP3.

The most straightforward option is to use Spotify offline mode (available only to Premium subscribers), which allows you to download songs and albums before taking off and then listen while in aircraft mode without affecting the plane's proper operations. Another option is to extract MP3s from a Spotify Free or Premium account using Audi-cable Spotify Music Recorder. You could save your full Spotify playlist as a local MP3 file and play it on any device without an internet connection.
