Windows File Explorer has slowed to an unworkable pace since we installed Windows update Windows Update March 14, 2023—KB5023696 on our W10 21H2 pcs.  We have tried the following;

  • uninstalling the update - file explorer still slow
  • updating with the latest versions of updates - made no difference
  • removing KB5023696 and installing latest update - no difference
  • rebuilding a pc - file explorer works, install update - file explorer slows down
  • repairing system files - made no difference
  • restarting File Explorer - improves performance for a short time, but the issue returns
  • Restarting makes no difference
  • updated drivers, including BIOS - no difference
  • experienced by all users and on all devices that have been updated

The issue manifests itself when trying to find files for attaching to emails or searching the directory.  The location of files is irrelevant, it is not network related.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
