Extension association

MS apears to have restricted extension association to apps that came from the MS store. Is there a way to create associations for other apps?

By which I mean apps already installed and runnable from "Start"
You want to for example assign .psd to Photoshop without actually installing Photoshop?
why?
No - the other way round. For example I have installed eDrawings by Dasault aviation systems in order to view dxf files using a viewer produced by the producer of soliworks. However this has not automatically associated dxf with edrawings. So I am trying to do this manually - but "Choose default apps by file type" does not allow me to select eDrawing even though it is installed. I just refers me to the MS store.
