Windows 10 release upgrades- How does it work?

Where can I get more information about the windows 10 upgrade process (like creator update)?  It feel like windows reinstalling itself and keeping a backup copy of the oldest one but I would like to understand a little more how it is made, as I had drivers issues at my last attempts on 1703.

P.S.:  I meant upgrading from windows 10 release to a newer one, not from earlier OS...
