Windows Update: Deadline vs. Deferral

Copper Contributor

Hi,

for Windows Update I can configure via Intune two separate settings:

  • Feature update deferral period (days)
  • Deadline for feature updates

I'm not sure how these two settings work together: If I enter a value of 30 days deferral period and a 7 day deadline I would assume that the user will need to install it at least after 37 days.

But from the documentation it is not clear if those values add up - perhaps I'd need to set the deadline always on a higher number than the deferral period.

Can someone clarify this / has seen it in real world and knows what happens?

@Markus Ihloff . deferreal period means  postponed of  installing updates . within this period windows os does not checks for online updates.

but deadline period  means windows os  continously checks for online updates with internet connection.

for example if  you enabled both means  36 days  you can enjoy the windows os  without updates with disconnected internet

Hi@Markus Ihloff

When you defer feature updates, new Windows features won’t be offered, downloaded, or installed for a period of time that is greater than the deferral period set. Deferring feature updates doesn’t affect security updates, but it does prevent you from getting the latest Windows features as soon as they're available.

About Deadline:

Although you can decide when automatic updates and restarts should occur, you can only set deadlines for up to 30 days for a feature and quality updates, and you can only postpone a restart for up to 7 days. Also, using this policy, users won't be allowed to reschedule a restart.

Deadline allows specifying the number of days that a user has before quality and feature updates are installed on their device automatically. Also, there is an option to set a grace period after which the operating system restarts automatically.

this article explains about Deadline policy:
