I am not sure whether this has been requested already, however I was wondering whether Universal Print could support AAD authentication through RFID based badges when collecting printouts from the printers. Obviously the printer needs to have embedded a card reader :)

Thanks for your attention

Status changed to: Clarification needed

@Giuseppe GARZONI We would like to better understand if you are looking for a badge solution directly from Microsoft or are 3rd party badge reader solutions an option for you?

Hello Jimmy_Wu, thanks for following-up, Ideally the badge support should be provisioned from Microsoft itself.

Thanks @Giuseppe GARZONI for the additional clarification.

Hello, Microsoft any news in above regards?

Thank you :)

@Jimmy_Wu  Any news on potentially adding this to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap for Universal Print? Thanks!

@Jimmy_Wu @Rani_Abdellatif any news on adding this to the Universal print roadmap?  We are extremely interested in this feature.  Thanks!

Copper Contributor

@Jimmy_Wu Have you got any further news on this feature?

We are working with partners to enable RFID/badge swap support.  At this time, we don't have anything we can share.

I think, this could be related to Secure and Follow Me Printing - Microsoft Community Hub

Because the pull (follow-me) process is usually being started by an authentication (i. e. via RFID card).

@Jimmy_WuI see that the status has been changed to 'Planned' can you tell more about the solution and the expected release date?
We are considering using Universal Print as our Secure Printing Software. One of the demands is authentication through our company acces card at the printer.

RFIC / badge use for secure release with Universal Print can be thought of as 2 independent deployment architecture models.

  1. Existing: Printers with built-in hard drive and OEM's own badge release solution or a 3rd party badge release solution
    • In this configuration, these print jobs sent to the printer are held within the printer waiting for user to identify themselves at the printer using their badge.  This is available and usable today, but is dependent on the external solution.
  2. Planned: The additional, but separate feature this feature request is addressing is where Universal Print ready printers integrates with the native Universal Print's supported communication protocol to securely transfer information related to the user who badged in at the printer to initiate the badge release of the user's print job.
    • In this configuration, the physical printers do NOT need hard drives to hold the jobs and dynamically retrieves the badged in user's print job(s) when the user is at the printer.
    • The badge reader and user experience supported at the printer is defined and controlled by the printer vendor.
    • As previously mentioned, we are working with different partners to support this and as you can expect, different partners have different release schedules and plans.  We are only able to share that this work is currently in active co-development with partners.
