Universal print would be a lot more useful if it provided support for both Windows and macOS devices as many enterprises support both platforms.

I agree it would be great to support macOS especially with Google Cloud Print going away next year

Brass Contributor

Also print via iOS/iPadOS would be nice to have

Copper Contributor

Mac print is essential, also a guest print feature would be nice.

I looked at the design guide, and it appears this is using IPP, meaning that MacOS support should be an easy addition.  I got very excited about the announcement, but was disappointed to see it's windows OS only.  In education, Macs are a huge installed base, and over 80% of our students have them despite no requirement by the college.

A few third party vendors (Papercut, YSoft) have announced that Microsoft has been working with them on the down-low for awhile - hopefully they have already started cooperating with Apple on this...

Hello,

We have Papercut and we are very interested by Universal Print to be able to deallocate our On Premise Print Servers.

We need to print from Mac OS and Windows 10.

I understant Mac OS is not supported for the moment ? Right ?

Thanks a lot for your help !

Hi @rubensaada

@Troy Phillips is right. At PaperCut we're working with Microsoft to support print management on Universal Print for all major client operating systems.

For existing PaperCut customers today, we do have a few options available to support macOS clients without local print servers.

If you reach out to our support team we'll be able to help work out the best solution for your Mac users until they're fully supported by Universal Print.

Cheers

More platforms (MacOS, ChromeOS) would be definitely beneficial. However, IPP on Mac presents some challenges - this is not IPP Infra, just plain old IPP.

If you are interested in Cloud Print Management, YSoft SafeQ Cloud (shameless employer promo ;) supports MacOS cloud printing (without any 3rd party clients) alongside Universal Print B-).

I agree macOS, iOS and Android support would be nice!

Copper Contributor

It's not a complete solution for most enterprises without Mac and mobile support.

Copper Contributor

We are split pretty much 50-50 Mac - Windows so ned MAC support to be of any use to us

Copper Contributor

Agreed, our high school has mixed Windows/MacOS. Will Universal Print support those 2 device types?

Copper Contributor

Mac would be nice, iOS is really essential though.  MacOS at least you can manage and secure enough to add to the internal network, iOS especially BYOD most organizations are putting in a wifi SSID that's walled off - but AirPlay is not easily configured in large organizations, without building multi-NIC bridge boxes in every site that spans your firewall.  Universal Print would neatly solve that by allowing print to internal print servers while only needing internet access not internal network.

Copper Contributor

How do you go live with "Universal Print" with no Mac support 🤦‍:male_sign:

Copper Contributor

We are a mix of Windows/MAC client systems. Support for MAC printing would go a long way to being able to consider moving our US printing infrastructure (maybe even global) to the cloud in Azure. The potential for reduced latency due to regional routing could be leveraged. Unfortunately, local resources and alternative vendors must be utilized instead.

Copper Contributor

I cant believe this does not have MAC OS support. Please rectify this immediately, nobody can actually implement this in a serious corporate environment if you Ignore MAC OS

Microsoft

Work on this feature has started but we don't currently have a time estimate for completion.

Copper Contributor

Definately, this is something our clients are expecting us to work on in 2022

Brass Contributor

Big disappointment that it's not usable on Macs.

Copper Contributor

Its not Universal Printing if it does not support OS X devices, which most businesses these days do have to support.

Copper Contributor

We need it too, any updates here yet?

Copper Contributor

Our entire organization works with macOC. Function would be a great added value.

Copper Contributor

Honestly hard to implement this without MacOS support in ANY enterprise. Won't consider using until this rolled out.

Brass Contributor

Please bring this full circle.

Copper Contributor

Universal Print must support all OS'es including Windows, Mac, and Linux to be fully useful.

Our organisation has multiple users that use either Mac or Linux for their work, not just Windows.

Copper Contributor

It is simply not a universal print solution if it only works on Windows devices!

Copper Contributor

Universal Print was released in March 2022. It is now November 2022 and it is still not "Universal" and only works on Windows. Therefore half of my employees are being excluded from the solution who use Macs. When is a fix coming?

Otherwise it is currently a bit of a joke...

Copper Contributor

Universal Print? = Yes
Windows support? = Yes

MacOS support? = No
iOS support? = No
Android support? = No
Linux support? = No
Label printers support? = No

Scanner support? = No

cheap b2b solution? = No
Continuous and informed development? = No

Universal Print support needs to do a better job of supporting MFP devices.  We are Kyocera TaskALFA users about to upgrade to a "Fully Qualified" Universal Print-capable device, but there's a lot of caveats - it doesn't work nicely with finishing equipment.  And it doesn't work at all with MacOS.  Is this some kind of a joke?  Either make it cross-platform and truly capable, or remove "Universal" from the name.

Copper Contributor

Feature is "in progress" but, can someone from Microsoft team provide an estimated release date?
