We could use a community dedicated to patch management where all things patches are discussed or reported.

Thanks.

Hi @Harjit-Dhaliwal, thanks for submitting your idea. If a Patch Management Community were to be created, what potential spaces/labels within that community would you want to see?

Bronze Contributor

@Maddie_Egan, I would say that it would need to be a Community of it's own, since patch management would cover all platforms and products, and nor just Windows and Server.

@Harjit-Dhaliwal Thanks for getting back to me! If Patch Management were to be it's own community, would you want sub-communities (called spaces) within it? For example, we have an Excel community with spaces such as Formulas and Functions, Macros and VBA, etc.

Hi @Harjit-Dhaliwal, I just wanted to follow up on this. If Patch Management were to be it's own community, what spaces would you like to see within that community?

Bronze Contributor

Hi @Maddie_Egan, For spaces, I would suggest Monthly Patch Buletins, Advisories, Patch Reports, Troubleshooting, 3rd Party, for a start.

Thanks.

Bronze Contributor

Hi @Maddie_Egan, any progress on the Patch Management community? Thanks.

@Harjit-Dhaliwal - still working on it! Should have an update soon.

Copper Contributor

What is the update on this? I am also interested!!

A Patch Management community would come in handy for announcement such as this from today:

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/msrc/2017/02/14/february-2017-security-update-release/

Our top priority is to provide the best possible experience for customers in maintaining and protecting their systems. This month, we discovered a last minute issue that could impact some customers and was not resolved in time for our planned updates today.

After considering all options, we made the decision to delay this month’s updates. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this change to the existing plan.

Copper Contributor

Thank you for providing that Harjit. That was an important post that I had missed.

Former Employee

Thanks for your patience on this! I should have an update soon.

FYI - February 2017 patches have been delayed to March 14 - See blog post:

UPDATE: 2/15/17: We will deliver updates as part of the planned March Update Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

Is there an update for the Patch Management Community?

Thanks.

Thanks for your idea and sorry no one has gotten back to you in a long time. So here is my thoughts on this, if there is a blog where we post patches information and you can comment on that blog what would you be hoping to get out of a community dedicated to that?

Is it just that you want to increase visibility of the blog? The blog has no comments on it so its hard to know if there is a community to build around this topic. Not saying no.. not at all.. just want to make sure that we aren't duplicating already existing content needlessly

Copper Contributor

Well a blog is one thing, but a community will give people the opportunity to post questions and discussions revolving around the patches and not rely on a blog topic to be in place. This can be anything from like what Harjit posted above about a critical issue in patches, to questions about deployment. Being a part of a community and being notified of important topics that other patch management admins have come across, at least I'd feel, would be very beneficial.

@Shelby Hartsell,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I am not clear on why you wouldn't post that information in the comments on the blog though? I want to be clear I am not saying no I just want to understand what the community is looking for that is not already available.

Please do continue to share you thoughts with us.

Allen, I have gone through the explanation process several times, even in person with your team. Patch Management is a major component for Information Technology and for IT Pros in their respective organizations. For example, take the recent Meltdown/Spectre security vulnerability which has drawn a lot of attention and there are lots of articles and bulletins, some overlapping, some new, some contradictory on how to mitigate this issue. Posting comments within each of those posts would be ineffective, unproductive, and wouldn't get to the attention to those who matter, which are IT Pros working in the trenches. A one-stop shop with a Patch Management community here would solve a lot of issues with information sharing and also will provide an avenue for discussion and building a community. I'm actively sharing these types of valuable info on selected Facebook groups, Twitter, LinkedIn, and even Yammer. In my opinion, it's a no brainer to have a Patch Management community setup here. Thanks.

Ok - we will continue to keep this under review while we assess demand. In the mean time please feel free to socialize this idea and get it some "Up Vote" as this is by far the easiest way we have to measure demand.

Hi @Harjit-Dhaliwal

Are you looking for something like the MSRC Blog?

Bronze Contributor

Not quite, although the MSRC blog can be handy. I'm looking for a space to discuss and share patching matter such as important patches that are out of Band, patching fixes, issues, etc. Similar to sharing info like I have done in my blog: http://harjit.us/windows-pxe-boot-issues-kb4493467-april-9-2019/

This space will become quite useful for helping IT Pros with patching stuff.

Thank you for your idea,

We are always looking for new ideas to take forward however, at this time, a Patch Management Community is not something on our road map.
