What options do I have to create a custom Teams app?

I know that it´s possible to create an app in Teams by the use of "App Studio for Microsoft Teams".

That´s a nice way in many situations, but it´s quite limited in some cases.

I´m looking for a way to create a Teams app that is little more advanced, something similar to Microsoft planner for Teams.

Is it possible in some way to create a custom Teams-app? Or is "App Studio for Microsoft Teams" my only option?
