System Center 2019 – What’s new

Microsoft just launched Windows Server 2019 and Windows Admin Center, which also raised the interest in System Center 2019. At Microsoft Ignite, Microsoft was talking about what is new in System Center 2019, the future of System Center, and how it fits in with Windows Admin Center and other management tools.

We are currently running SCOM 1807 on Windows 2012 R2 OS/SQL 2016, in order to get to windows 2016/2019 OS, can we do an in-place OS upgrade?     Has anyone did this before, is this supported by Microsoft?    Are there any special steps necessary to do this, like should we disable all SQL/SCOM services during the in-place OS upgrade

Hi @Eric Sabo,

Yes you can perform an in-place upgrade of your current SCOM 1807 servers running on Windows Server 2012 R2 servers to either Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019, in-place upgrades are supported by Microsoft, but not recommended.

Please also note that SCOM 1807 is no longer supported (ended January 24, 2020), I would highly advise you to upgrade your SCOM environment to either SCOM 2016 or SCOM 2019.

Since you're running SQL Server 2016 which is supported by both SCOM 1807, 2016 & 2019, you don't need to do anything else other than the in-place upgrade of your Windows Server operating systems, remember to take backups before doing anything.

My recommendation would still be to set up a new Windows Server 2016 on the side (Windows Server 2019 is not supported by SCOM 1807), and make them as SCOM management servers, perform this until you've exchanged all your old SCOM servers.
