To improve performance and scalability, you can install the Service Manager management server on a computer separate from the Service Manager database. This can be useful in situation where you only want databases installed on computers hosting SQL Server. In the following diagram, Computer 1 will host the Service Manager management server and Computer 2 will host both SQL Server and the Service Manager database.
The following table outlines the recommended hardware and software requirements for Service Manager beta 1 (see product documentation at each milestone for updated requirements).
Computer 1
Dual-core 2.66 GHz CPU 4 gigabytes (GB) RAM 10 GB of available hard drive disk space |
The 64-bit edition of Widows Server 2008 Standard or the 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 |
Computer 2
Quad-core 2.66 GHz CPU 8 gigabytes (GB) RAM 10 GB of available hard drive disk space RAID Level 1 or Level 10 drive* |
The 64-bit edition of Widows Server 2008 Standard or the 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise The 64-bit version of SQL Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise |
Once you have ensured that both computers meet the necessary hardware and software requirements, you can start the installation process by first creating a group of users in Active Directory which will be the Service Manager administrators and creating or identifying a domain account that you can use as a service account during setup. See the section “Preparing for Service Manager Deployment” in the Installation and Initial Configuration Guide (pages 14-15). You will start the normal installation procedure by installing Service Manager on the computer that will host the Service Manager management server (Computer1) . See “Install a Service Manager management server, CMDB, and console” in the Installation and Initial Configuration Guide (pages 18-20) with a change on step 7. On the Configure the Service Manager database page (as shown in the following figure), type the server name of the computer that is to host the Service Manager database (Computer2) before selecting Instance. The rest of the installation proceeds normally.
