To improve performance and scalability, you can install the Service Manager management server on a computer separate from the Service Manager database. This can be useful in situation where you only want databases installed on computers hosting SQL Server. In the following diagram, Computer 1 will host the Service Manager management server and Computer 2 will host both SQL Server and the Service Manager database.
The following table outlines the recommended hardware and software requirements for Service Manager beta 1 (see product documentation at each milestone for updated requirements).

Once you have ensured that both computers meet the necessary hardware and software requirements, you can start the installation process by first creating a group of users in Active Directory which will be the Service Manager administrators and creating or identifying a domain account that you can use as a service account during setup. See the section “Preparing for Service Manager Deployment” in the Installation and Initial Configuration Guide (pages 14-15). You will start the normal installation procedure by installing Service Manager on the computer that will host the Service Manager management server (Computer1) . See “Install a Service Manager management server, CMDB, and console” in the Installation and Initial Configuration Guide (pages 18-20) with a change on step 7. On the Configure the Service Manager database page (as shown in the following figure), type the server name of the computer that is to host the Service Manager database (Computer2) before selecting Instance. The rest of the installation proceeds normally.
To validate a Service Manager installation

Service Manager is installed in the folder specified during setup (default is Program Files\Microsoft System Center\Service Manager 2010).

The Service Manager console successfully connects to the Service Manager management server.

To start the Service Manager console, click Start , point to Programs , click System Center Service Manager v 1.0 , and then click Service Manager Console .

The first time that you run the Service Manager console, the Connect To Server dialog box appears. In the Server name field, enter the computer name of the server that is hosting the Service Manager management server (Computer1).

On the computer hosting the Service Manager database (Computer2), on the Windows desktop, click Run , point to Programs , point to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 , and then click SQL Server Management Studio . Expand the list of Databases and observe that an SMDB database has been created (the name of this database may change in a future release).
