Pasting an image from (desktop) Outlook into Sway is not possible while pasting images from webpages and/or other Office (desktop) documents is Ok.

Repro:

  1. Open a (new) Sway
  2. Insert a text card
  3. Open an webpage/Office document containing images
  4. Select image and copy it (right-click - copy)
  5. Switch to Sway and select Text card
  6. Right-click and select Paste. This creates a new Image card with the copies image
  7. Switch to (desktop) Outlook
  8. Select an Outlook message with an inline image
  9. Select the image and copy it (right-click - copy)
  10. Switch to Sway and select Text card
  11. Right-click. No Paste option available. Also Ctrl-V doesn't work

Is this expected behavior or should this work?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Wim - hmmm... that behaviour sounds a little strange to me.

When you copy the image like that, are you able to paste it into Paint or another app?  If so, that might give you a workaround, since you might be able to copy and paste from that app into Sway.

Based on some advice from a colleague, it sounds like we try to paste into Sway based on URLs rather than actual image objects, so if we can't reference the source object by URL, maybe that's what's going wrong.  I'm not sure how in-line images are handled in Outlook messages, but maybe they're not accessible externally.  Also, Sway tries to access the image using an anonymous connection (that is, it doesn't use your credentials), so if only the owner of the e-mail can access the image, maybe that's what's going wrong.

Let us know how things go with the copy-paste workaround, and we can log a bug.

Thanks for the report!

Hi Chris,

Pasting images based on URL works like a charm. Pasting from Apps both Desktop and UWP are worse with different behaviors. My mentioned workaround works, I can past images from (desktop) Word and PowerPoint. Outlook works, as long as the image is an attachment. As long as it is part of the "message" I can copy it and past it into PowerPoint. That same past fails for Sway. If I (re)copy the pasted image from PowerPoint, I can paste in into Sway. In both situation Sway will create an Image card holding the (pasted) image. By the way both scenario's are local based operations, I just open a clean new PPTX for pasting the images, then recopy to paste finally into Sway.

Another weird scenario ... :)

If I open (double-click) a desktop Outlook (image) attachment, the image opens in the (Windows 10) Photos App. If I copy the image in this App (right-click - copy) pasting into Sway is Ok. But .... if I open multiple (attached) attached pictures from Outlook, opening multiple Photos App instances, I can only copy the first instance into Sway... This is 'advanced' scenario, no high prio, just to let you know.

By the way, I do have more 'advanced' experiences while pasting into Sway. If you/the team is interested let me know :L-). We use Sway to create a newsletter, so the majority of information gathered comes from messages send into an O365 Group.

Hi Wim - sorry this one fell off my radar for a long time.

I checked up with the team, and unfortunately this is a known issue for now.  There's a weird technical reason for it: because the copy-paste information contains a URL, the Sway service tries to download the image directly in the background, and the authorization fails because it doesn't have permission to access your Outlook data.  We have a task on our backlog to use a different system to grab the image, but we haven't yet gotten to it.  Sorry about the inconvenience.

We're doing some work on the authoring system now that will hopefully fix a lot of copy-paste bugs in the long run, but we don't have a committed time frame for that yet.  Sometime soon though, we hope!

Hi Chris, no problem and thanks for letting me know. I still have my workaround, so I'm able to continue work. Hope the team get this to work over time.

I have some other weird experiences I which I will post in another threat, specifically copying/parting text.
