Earlier this year, we announced the Public Preview of the latest update to the Surface Hub operating system, the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update. This update delivers top customer-requested features and brings new and added experiences to help customers configure, manage and collaborate on their 1st-generation Surface Hubs and Surface Hub 2S devices. Since releasing the public preview we’ve seen incredible reception from our customers who have installed the update and provided valuable feedback.

Today, we’re pleased to share more information about the availability of Windows 10 Team 2020 Update, based on Windows 10, version 20H2, for all Surface Hub 2S devices, starting October 27, 2020.  Availability for 1st-generation Surface Hub (55” and 84”) is expected soon after, and we’ll communicate as it becomes available.

You can obtain Windows 2020 Update using one of the following:

  • Windows Update for Business. Recommended option.
  • Windows Update. Recommended option.
  • Bare metal recovery (BMR) image. Recommended option for customers who join their devices to Azure Active Directory or don’t allow their devices to receive updates from the internet.

Windows Update for Business

The Windows 10 Team 2020 Update is a feature update – which means IT admins can manage installation using Windows Update for Business rings, similar to your standard Windows 10 update rings. Using these rings allows organizations to stay current with the latest security updates.

Note: The Windows 10 Team 2020 Update is based on Windows 10, version 20H2. Windows 10, version 20H2 was released on October 20, 2020. When planning Windows installation rings for Windows Update for Business, please calculate your deferral period from October 20, 2020.

Windows Update

For customers using Windows Update, we'll be taking a phased approach and throttle the updates by regions/countries as detailed in the following table:

NZ, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Mexico

Bare metal recovery (BMR) image

The BMR image for Surface Hub 2S will be available on October 27, 2020.  As soon as we have the update ready for 1st-Generation Surface Hub devices, a new and improved Surface Hub Recovery Tool (SHRT) will become available too.

Support for RS2

Windows 10, version 1703 (RS2) reached end of servicing on October 8, 2019, except for Surface Hub which remained in support. We extended support for Surface Hub to continue to provide our customers with security and quality updates. As we roll out the Windows 10 Team 2020 update based on Windows 10, version 20H2, the last RS2-based security update will be distributed on December 8, 2020, at which point Windows 10 Team RS2 will reach end of service for Surface Hub.

Windows Insider program

If you're currently enrolled in the Windows Insiders Program (WIP) for Surface Hub you can get the update via BMR/SHRT. Alternatively, you can choose to remain in WIP Slow or Fast to continue receiving early features of the OS. When Windows 10 Team RS2 reaches end of servicing, we will switch to Slow ring for Windows 10 Team 2020.

Prepare for Windows 10 Team 2020 Update

The recommended update path is via Windows Update or Windows Update for Business. Customers who don’t allow their devices to receive updates from the internet and customers who wish to join their devices to Azure Active Directory or start on a clean slate can use the new Windows 10 Team 2020 BMR Image.

Important note on Surface Hub 2S

When updating drivers and firmware for Surface Hub 2S, we’re updating drivers and firmware on both the compute unit (“Cartridge”) and the Touch-Display Module (TDM). It is required that both be updated at the same time to avoid driver/firmware compatibility issues. Customers should allow up to 60 minutes to complete the update process.

We are committed to empowering organizations to transform their meeting spaces in today’s world. Delivering this update is an important step for Surface Hub and for our customers relying on Surface Hub to stay connected and navigate hybrid and remote work environments.

Great news @Yoav Barzilay

Awesome cannot wait.  Quick question if we have a unit in the insider ring on Surface Hub 2S could we just use the internal Surface Hub OS Reset to pull us out of it or will we require to get the new recovery image and restore off of USB?

Please advise.  Thanks!

Brass Contributor

@ToddMethven

Please do not do a reset on the Surface Hub, it is way to slow.

Always do a Bare Metal Recovery

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/surface-hub/surface-hub-2s-recover-reset#recover-surface-hub-2s-by-...

Then you get a "new" Hub and you will need to do a OOBE of the Hub again

@Yoav Barzilay, looking forward to seeing and rolling out this update to our 1st Gen Surface Hubs.

Brass Contributor

Perfect timing, great news for a Friday thanks @Yoav Barzilay and the whole team, great work

Brass Contributor

That's a pretty short timeframe for getting them into support mode again, global availability ending on December 8 and the Global rollout just enabled on December 7th (Windows Update).

I'm so excited to get this update. Do you know where I can find a working link for the Update image? The link in the site mentioned "BMR image for Surface Hub 2Sabove is broken and returns a Bad Request. The Windows 10 Team Version 1703 works fine.

Copper Contributor

Same issue as @gretarm receiving 'Bad Request' and am accessing from US East Coast.

Copper Contributor

Looks like the BMR download started working.  Was able to download the 7.6+GB ZIP.

Copper Contributor

@kennyg007 do you know about a tutorial on how to setup the usb drive and install the new image on a Surface Hub 2S?

Copper Contributor

@gretarm , the download page reference the creation of the USB drive here:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/creating-and-using-a-usb-recovery-drive-for-surface-6778....

So, picking up at the section 'Create a recovery drive with a downloaded factory image', I went ahead and created a USB recovery drive (steps 1-6).  I'm finishing up copying/extracting all the files from the ZIP onto the USB (steps 7-9).  When I go in tomorrow, I'll power off the Surface Hub, stick the USB drive in, and then follow the 'Boot from a USB drive' steps.  I'm already preparing myself for a long day as this was quite the day when I did the 1703 BMR boot in Jan.

Copper Contributor

Thank you for the details @kennyg007 and the heads up that this might turn out to take longer than expected. I'll give this a try. GL & HF!

Copper Contributor

Hello,

the Download link is working for me. Im operating from Germany. The download is about 7.3 GB

We have installed the new 2020 build on several devices but when signing in and going to edit file, it comes up with "To edit and save, an Office 365 subscription is required" and presents two options "Get Office 365" or "Dismiss". When selecting "Get Office 365" it prompts you to enter an email address but when entering the company address it says "That Microsoft account doesn't exist" even though it's the same one I logged in with.

Is this a known issue with the 2020 build?

Brass Contributor

@SurfaceHub2S

I had the same issue yesterday, but was solved today.

It looks like an issue on O365, that we also had in January 2020.

Other issue I see is, with Local admin, and trying to sign in with a user in another tenant, then SSO does not work.

when user is in same domain, it works.

also I don't understand why the New edge browser is not in the image, you will need to download a separate provisioning file to install that.

Hi,
We are in Belgium and updating our Surface Hubs through WSUS but at the moment I am not seeing the 2020 update.
All the Classifications and all the Windows 10 Products are selected in WSUS.
As the table shows, in Belgium, the update should have been visible after October 27, 2020 but... nothing.

Am I missing something ?

Brass Contributor

Hi,

Great news.

Any news on the availability for the 1st generation Surface Hubs? Got a customer with about 50 chumping at the bit to get the update applied.

Thanks.

Silver Contributor

@Yoav Barzilay, any news on the availability for the 1st generation Surface Hub? I'd like to get our Hubs updated and like customers that @Jonathan Birkett, is mentioning, I too am chomping at the bit to get the update installed.

Copper Contributor

To echo others on this forum, is there any ETA for the update being made available for the 1st gen surface hubs (both 55" and 84") ?

Silver Contributor

@Yoav Barzilay, any word on the release of this Windows Update for 1st Generation Surface Hubs????????????????

Brass Contributor

It's the 03.12.2020 and the update is still not available in Germany.

Brass Contributor

@K_E

Roll out start December 7

If you can´t wait, you can download the image and do a BMR

Microsoft Support | Download a recovery image for Microsoft Surface

and then install the new browser afterwards:

Install and configure the new Microsoft Edge on Surface Hub - Surface Hub | Microsoft Docs

Copper Contributor

@Lars Berlau 7.12.2020 ? Where did you get this information ?

official statement from MS

"Die Freigabe des automatischen Updates wurde verschoben. Wir haben derzeit kein ETA, aber das Update ist an unserer Seite vorliegend und Sie können es mithilfe von eines USB-Wiedeherstellungslaufwerks installieren."

Or that is what I get out of it...

But might have changed since they provided you the info that it is postponed, but haven´t heard about that before.

I have just downloaded it myself, and done BMR and then installed the provisioning file with the new browser.

Silver Contributor

@Yoav Barzilay and others, I'd love it if Microsoft would make an official statement here on this post with any updates especially for Surface Hub 1.

Silver Contributor

@K_E, thanks for posting that link to the Surface IT Pro blog on the Surface Hub updates. Disappointed that it still isn't available to the 1st Gen Hubs.

Copper Contributor
  • To be honest, i'm disapointed in many things with the new OS. The know errors are quite massiv in some cases, then as i mentioned in another topic - deferring the update via Intune failed totally, all surface hubs we're updated even tough the policiy was applied successfully on every surface hub. Then, calling this a modern device but still not beeing able to have all settings within Intune. We still have to go to all locations where we have surface hubs just to change some settings, which aren't avaiable via Intune. No wonder for me they had to stop the rollout. Best thing is that they are so cheap - oh wait a minute...
Brass Contributor

@Simon_Aebi

Well you can´t expect to get everything for that price ;)

Copper Contributor

@Simon_Aebi - had that issue too but found out the issue too late :( . Intune update ring policy doesn't work on the hubs you need to use a Custom policy using this URI
