Today we are super pleased to announce another milestone in the Surface journey with the release of a major new form factor.

Unveiled today and shipping September 10, Surface Duo represents the next wave of mobile productivity, inspiring people to rethink what is possible with the device in their pocket. Surface Duo delivers the easiest way to multitask on the go, bringing together the power of Microsoft 365 experiences and the full ecosystem of Android mobile apps. Starting at $1,399, Surface Duo opens into the thinnest mobile device on the market with an 8.1" PixelSense Fusion display connected by a revolutionary 360-degree hinge, allowing you to use each 5.6" display individually or together, across a variety of modes. Do more wherever you are with Surface Duo.

Initially, Surface Duo will be available in the US. We’ll share more information about market expansion at a later date. We continue to take a measured and phased approach to availability to meet customer demand and partner expectations.

Commercial customers can go here to find a commercial reseller for Surface Duo. You can get technical documentation about managing Surface Duo from our newly published site on Microsoft Docs with more content coming soon.

Enterprise-level security from chip to cloud

Surface Duo has protection built in at every layer with deeply integrated hardware, firmware, and software to keep your devices, identities, and data secure. Part of what makes this happen is that we built in our custom engineered Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) which enables full control over firmware components. Microsoft delivers Enterprise-grade security to Surface Duo by writing or reviewing every line of firmware code in house, enabling Microsoft to respond directly and agilely, to potential firmware threats and to mitigate supply chain security risks. To learn more, check out the Surface Duo security overview.

Another new capability that also helps raise the bar on productivity is the option of connecting to a full Windows 10 experience in the cloud with Windows Virtual Desktop. To learn more, take a look at Windows Virtual Desktop on Surface.

Simply put, Surface Duo is a perfect fit for the modern workplace.

Stay in control with cloud-based management

You can manage the entire Surface Duo experience for employees and protect work data with a variety of mobile device management (MDM) options, including Microsoft Intune.

We understand how challenging it can be to balance the needs of your end users bringing their own device (BYOD) with enterprise requirements to protect corporate data. Intune app protection helps address this balance by protecting data without requiring users to enroll their device into their company portal. App protection policy settings only take effect when handling corporate data such as using Outlook to send a draft presentation for review. If the same user logs into Outlook with a personal account, the app protection policies have no effect.

Intune lets you manage Google play to distribute line of business and store applications to your non- enrolled devices in the app protection scenario.  All this helps make App protection and  Android enterprise work profiles the most implemented MDM scenarios. And that’s the reason we designed Surface Duo to be fully optimized for both. You can also manage Surface Duo in highly managed, corporate-owned device scenarios using Full device management or Dedicated device management.

Can't wait to get one, is there an estimated date for release in germany?

I'm curious how the Duo will work with Display Link. I've just onboarded a 1000 coworkers with Surface (Go, Laptop, Pro & Book). They are working in flex workspace with only 1 usb C cable (network, power, monitor) via Display Link. All EMS/Intune AutoPilot and WvD rolled out (yes, I know that's double, but there are reasons why). Now the majority has 2 devices on/with them (a windows device and a phone). If I can persuade to only one that would be fantastic. We've tried Display Link on Android and WvD, that wasn't an endconsumer friendly experience. Hope the Duo does it better......

I'm glad that a device like this is finally coming to the market.  I have been excited about it since I first heard of it late 2019.  As a field technician something like the duo would be the dream companion for my jobs allowing me to have more 2 apps running consecutively such as;

  • work calculations or test results on one screen and forms on the other
  • Quoting paperwork on one and notes on the other

The possibilites are endless and all without breaking my work flow.  Infact, if anything it would increase my productivity and reduve the time spent on jobs dealing with the admin and paperwork. Split screen on android is ok, but the size can only take you so far and I end up screenshotting a lot of the time for forms later.

The only improvements I would like a future iteration of the device are;

  • Dual Sim;  This is very important as a self emplyed contractor.  I don't want to have two devices for my personal and work.  Its the reason I stick to the Samsung note series.
  • Integrated pen holder; Again I love the surface pen support but carrying that seperatley in my line of work will tend to losing it or damaging it more often than not.  Its also why I stick the Note series.

I am looking forward to see where this goes, only wish it was coming to the UK,  would love to see how my work life would improve.  Thanks for bringing another game changing device to the market

I'm super stocked for this device, from last year's induction I was sold I use both Google and Microsoft products, and services so I was sold, but Microsoft has said nothing about the Surface Duos availably outside of the US, which is so sad for Microsoft fans who have been waiting what seems like forever for this device, more clarity would be fantastic, and I hope that the Duo will release in Australia!:smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves for advertising the Surface Duo as a mobile device at a cost of $1,400, especially since the device has no IP67, IP68 and/or MIL STD 810 certifications.

They may as well advertise this device an a mini computer to be user at home and/or the in the office. They may want to add the cavate "use it as a mobile device at your own risk especially"!

I need a device that will survive the outdoors, not a mini computer that doesn't even run a Windows OS.
