Storage Sessions:

Tuesday, 4:45pm

SPC352 - Best Practices in Windows Storage

Speaker: Ram Kailasanathan

The statements “It’s just a file server” or “add another disk” don’t accurately reflect either the demands of storage today, or the capabilities provided across the Microsoft Storage technologies. Between the new capabilities in Windows Server 2008 and the storage-centric enhancements in the Windows Storage Server family of products, Windows is a very powerful storage platform.  In this session, we discuss some of the key customer needs that are addressed by Windows Storage solutions, and prescribe best practices as well as discuss features that you may not be aware of.

MGT250 - Technical Introduction to DPM 2007 – (200) part 1 of 3

Jason Buffington

This is the first of three sessions covering System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007. In this session, we provide an overview of DPM 2007, including demonstrations of primary workload protection—Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange, Office SharePoint Server, and Microsoft Virtual Server—using both near continuous protection to disk and long term archival to tape.

Thursday, 8:30 am

MGT366  - Protecting Applications with DPM2007 – (300) part 2 of 3

Jason Buffington

This is the second of three sessions on System Center Data Protection Manager 2007. In this session, we discuss the specifics of how data protection is achieved for each of the core workloads, including Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, and Virtualization, as well as advanced application topologies, recovery scenarios, etc.

VIR59-TLC - Data Protection and Virtualization – chalktalk

Jason Buffington & Edwin Yuen

Storage and Virtualization are two of the hottest technologies in IT right now—and they're even better together. Microsoft is delivering new products into both spaces, between Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager and System Center Virtual Machine Manager. Bring your data protection and virtualization questions, and hear how Microsoft customers can protect their virtual environments, prepare for disaster recovery, and even scale hosted backup services.

Thursday, 1:00 pm

OFC 352 - Protecting SharePoint with DPM2007

Jason Buffington

SharePoint Backup and Restore made easy with Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 for SharePoint.  See DPM 2007 in action with live demos.

MGT450 - Advanced Features in DPM2007 – (400) part 3 of 3

Jason Buffington  & Karandeep Anand

This is the last of three sessions on System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007. In this session, we discuss features not covered in other two, including: command-line control of DPM 2007 through Windows PowerShell, deployment of DPM through Configuration Manager 2007, monitoring of DPM with Operations Manager 2007, and bare metal recovery of production servers using the DPM System Recovery Tool (SRT).

SVR355 - Windows Server 2008 File Services : Deep Dive

Drew McDaniel

Windows Server 2008 contains a lot of changes to core file services components that will dramatically increase availability, scalability, and performance. Some of these components are new, others have been significantly enhanced. In this session, we start with an overview of the changes in Windows Server 2008 (e.g., DFS, VSS, and storage management), and then spend most of our time taking a really close look at what we believe to be the most significant and valuable improvements: Transactional NTFS, Self Healing NTFS, and SMB v2.0. So, bring your wet suit and join us for a session full of demos and deep technical insight.

MGT50-TLC - DPM 2007 Bare Metal Recovery – chalktalk

Jason Buffington & Karandeep Anand

In this interactive session, we discuss one of the newest features in Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007— bare metal recovery—using the DPM 2007 System Recovery Tool (SRT). SRT is an additional utility that is included with DPM 2007 for the purposes of restoring a product server’s operating system and application volumes, before restoring the data with DPM 2007. SRT includes powerful single-instance storage for de-duplication of common binaries and component files, and an easy restore mechanism using a bootable CD. We also have experts on hand to discuss other advanced functions within DPM 2007 including PowerShell control and scripting within the data protection system. Let’s talk about what else DPM 2007 can do, above and beyond continuous data protection for Windows application and file servers.
