Updating front end servers database

We have 3 front end servers connecting to 1 backend database. Is it recommneded to take all of the 3 front end servers offline before I update the database or can I go ahead and update the database safely without taking the FE servers offline?

You don't have to shutdown the pool, you can update the front end server one by one, and when done upgrade the back end.

I've updated the front end servers. I just need to know when I update the database what is best practice on how to update it as we only have one back end database. For example, will I need to shutdown services on the front end server from which I am updating the database on?

Will the update to the database cause any downtime temporarily?
