Cloud PBX - onprem pstn Connectivity - integration with analog devices

Brass Contributor

Hi Experts,

One of our customer wanted to go for on-prem PSTN Connectivity to use along with Cloud PBX in Hybrid deployment. However the on-prem PBX is not a qualified device as listed in telephony interoperability with Skype for Business article (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/dn947483.aspx).

In this case, customer wants to leverage SBC in here.

Questions:

1. Can we integrate the below analog devices by setting up the above deployment?

- Alarm system
- Parlophone system (at front door)
- Garage system
- Heaver system

2. Can you please advise what we need along with SBC?
3. Which type with sufficient ports for analogue systems?

Please advise. Many thanks.

Hi, I'm assuming that there is no existing on-premises Skype for Business environment. In that case you will need to utilise both an SBC and a Microsoft Cloud Connect Edition solution (CCE). CCE will let you create a hybrid voice environment with an on-premises PSTN connection, and is required at this time for achieving what you want. Going forward, Microsoft will introduce a 'bring your own trunk' capability that will enable you to connect directly from the on-premises SBC to the Microsoft cloud, however a CCE solution is still required at this time.

Vendors such as AudioCodes and Sonus both make SBC's with the CCE solution embedded on the appliance (cloud bond and cloud link respectively) for this very purpose. In terms of analogue requirements, again both SBC's come with analogue capabilities if required (FXS ports), although depending on quantity and locations, you may need to procure separate analogue gateways.

You should speak to AudioCodes or Sonus, or to a partner organisation, and have them spec the SBC / CCE appliance out for you - hope that helps a little.

Hi Ben,

Thank you very much for your inputs.

This customer wants to implement on-premise PSTN integration with CloudPBX when they currently do have on-prem Skype for Business 2015.

According to this article (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt455212.aspx) we can still leverage SBC for this scenario.

Please confirm. Many thanks.

That's exactly right, you can use an existing on-premises Skype for Business deployment instead of the CCE solution. The existing deployment needs to have an Edge server role deployed in order to do this.

At a very basic level; inbound calls will come in from your carrier, hit the SBC, be passed to the on-premises Skype platform, and then routed out the Edge server to Skype for Business Online. Outbound calls quite the opposite.

So in that instance you'd just need the SBC(s) on it's own without the embedded CCE components.

Kind regards
Ben
