what is virtual directories in SharePoint

i need more details about Virtual directories in SharePoint. Is it remote server path? where this directory is stored?

Apologies, but the concept or virtual directories don't apply to SharePoint Online. In SharePoint Online content is stored in Document Libraries and the technoogy used behind the scene is SQL
