What happened with reader role in SharePoint Online?

Copper Contributor

Hello,

If I try to add a new user in SharePoint Online using reader role permission it says that he don't have access to the site. Why? Now, only O365 group can access? But O365 has collaborative access and edit access and I don't want to use this permission.

How can I give some users, read permissions in SharePoint online?

Regards

Hello @santiago1976

do you try to add a internal or external user?

You can set on different levels if sharing of SharePoint sites is allowed at all or not.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/modern-experience-sharing-permissions

And no, you can set different permissions on SharePoint sites. Also you can set other permissions on SharePoint then in MS Teams, but it's not recommend.

Documentations are here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/modern-experience-sharing-permissions

Have you more informations or a PrintScree about your issue?

Best, Dave

Solution

Hi @DaveMehr365,

Thanks for your reply.

Fixed. The problem is that if you try to add the users in the SharePoint visitor groups (old groups) directly it doesn't work, but if you do it from the sharing functionality, it does work.

Hello @santiago1976

nice to hear 👏

👉 I think you would need to clean up and correct the permissions on the site so this doesn't happen anymore.
