What do multiple numbered site entries mean?

Copper Contributor
Hello.
I'm kind of new to SharePoint administration.  I was just looking through the SharePoint admin center to see what was there.  For one Site Name I see 6 entries.  They all say they are team sites.  The HR person doesn't know where these came from.  They might have been created by a former HR group employee.  They have no documents in them.  Any idea what would create these?  I assume SOMETHING happened multiple times that created the unique identifiers.  But why?

I wanted to create a single HR site with the proper access rights.  I'm concerned that my users may have access to randomly create SharePoint sites and I would prefer that we have some better control over this.

Thanks,

Ed

Hi,
Looking at the screenshot you have shared, these are the list of connected/associated team site of their corresponding Office 365 Group. Your organization admins/members have previously created different Teams in MS Teams or Office 365 Groups directly with same display names which has led to the provisioning of the corresponding team site in SharePoint of the Team or Office 365 Group.

Please refer to the below links which would be helpful -
1. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/manage-site-creation
2. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/create-groups/manage-creation-of-groups

Thanks.
