Version History Doc vs Web GUI

Hi,

In Word you can put fields in your doc, and I use that a lot. One of the fields currently in existence is the REVNUM. See e.g. below my doc in a view where you can see the field codes (all in {}):

and so it looks like the field codes resolve:

The REVNUM is almost what I'm looking for. It changes every time the doc's revision changes, whether it happens online or locally (sync right through one-drive) but it's not the same version number. As you can see, it's just a counter.

There are lots of online how-to who say how to do it, and it has to do with custom field codes in your doc but no one worked for me. Unfortunately, much of the how-to are outdated.

It's SO a common feature to have version numbers, and SharePoint display it right (see below), I can't believe I can't see it too, so I can see when I open a doc. The only alternative is to manually enter the version number in the doc, but then you need to know what it will be when you save it so it has the same version as SharePoint. It doesn't sound right to me.

Here's what I see in SharePoint (see Version column):

Thanks.
