Using the Hero web part in Templates

Copper Contributor

We are keen to move our templates to the new modern theme and make use of the amazing hero web part. We have found an issue when we save these sites as a template and use them to create a new site, the images and links on the hero web part do not point to the “new site” that has been created from the template they point to the “old site” that was used to save the .STP file i.e. the site where all the others will be cloned from.   All our templates have things like a doc library and various custom lists used for issues, risks, etc.

How we use templates: We have a different template connected to a type of project for example an Agile project vs a Waterfall project or a construction project etc.

We understand that we might need to run a script at the time of site creating the site to re point everything but were hoping to avoid a ‘code’ fix to this issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm happy to be corrected if anyone knows different, but it was my understanding that the use of templates for SP sites was considered more for the older classic sites, and didn't work so well with modern sites.

There are also lots of great templates that you can upload to your tenant via the SharePoint Look book which you can find here - https://lookbook.microsoft.com/

@SteveTz  Yea, Site Templates aren't supported in modern SharePoint Sites. The only supported path forward is to create PnP Provisioning Templates. Unfortunately, this does require some technical skills and some up front work. You can automate some of it by implementing them with Azure Functions + PnP PowerShell and Site Designs.
