Syncing a Document Library with a file Server

Copper Contributor

I'm working in the IT-Department of a small school. We are currently working in a Citrix environment. All of the Data is stored on a Fileserver. The teachers for example have access to the Studymaterial they prepare for their students on a mapped Network drive L:

We will be moving to the cloud shortly and are currently testing the new Laptops which we will be using. However it is difficult to test the new environment because currently we only have unidirectional syncing of the Fileserver to a Sharepoint Library. This means that any changes that were made in the cloud are lost.

Would it be possible to set up bidirectional syncing. So that people could be working in the cloud and via the Fileserver? The easiest way I could think of would be to just install the OneDrive client on the File Server and sync it that way. Has someone any experience with this?

This would only have to run for a short period of time. (About 1-2 Months max)

Thank you for your help

So no one has ever tried something like this before?

Solution
No, this will lead to nothing but trouble. You'll have conflicts that won't be able to be resolved. Moved everything to SPO/ODfB and work with it from there.

Or stay on-prem.
