SharePoint Online site collection rename is working as expected

Hello All,

I renamed a SharePoint online site, for instance, the URL is: https://abc.sharepoint.com/sites/office  and I renamed the URL to https://abc.sharepoint.edu/sites/officenew however the old URL did not get deleted. It still works when I type in the old URL and it also works when I type in the new URL. Is there a way to remove the old URL completely so users can use the new site without Interruption?
