SharePoint Online Office Document opened in App "We can't connect to sync this file right now."

SharePoint Online Office Document (not stored in OneDrive) when opened in application shows error notice "CAN'T SYNC We can't connect to sync this file right now."  Try Again (which doesn't work) Open in Office Online (which is not a preferred option).  Document appears to be AutoSave On but occasionaly documents are read only in app but can be edited online.

All searches for assistance keeping referring to OneDrive.  These files are not in OneDrive.

Can't figure out what is causing the error code shown in the attached screenshot.  Any help would be appreciated.
