Sharepoint Migration Tool - latest version broken?

Copper Contributor

The Sharepoint Migration Tool version  2.1.107.0 seems to hang and makes the machine unresponsive when migrating from file shares to Sharepoint Online. It also seems to consume all of the bandwidth and actually does not migrate much. This is on a Windows server 2016, multi core 16GB RAM machine.

The version 2.1.103.11 did not have any of this issues in very similar settings.

Has anyone else experienced it? is there a way to install an older version of the tool?

I haven’t used SPMT in a while but you could always try the latest public preview v3 which has some stability improvements and see if that makes any difference.  Ideally I’d try it from another machine, just to see if that helps, if there is one available with similar specs.

The link is from here by the way, where there isn’t any mention of the latest 2.1.107.0 version yet. I don’t think there is a way of installing older builds.

You could see if the log files have any clues, might not help but could be worth checking -

Finally, you could try posting this issue here, on the support forum - https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=SharePointMigrationTool

Hope you get it sorted!

I did post this to the technet and the response was to use some other migration tool.

Even raised a support ticket with Microsoft, so far they have not looked into it deeply other than offer some generic comments. They are no sure whether their On prem support or online support groups are responsible.

Not sure why there are no release notes for this version, but this is what one gets if one installs the Sharepoint Migration Tool:

The beta version has the exact same behavior.

I tried it on another machine with same result, will attempt yet another machine.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for the update @sajustrite, it sounds like you are doing all the right things and Microsoft needs to help track down the issue with you. Using another migration tool isn't really a solution, especially when SPMT was working for you before by the sounds of it.
