SharePoint Member group to be owner of SharePoint Contribute group

Copper Contributor

We have out of box SharePoint group "Members" and have created a customized "Contribute" group. The "Contribute" group has edit permissions to documents but can not delete lists and libraries.

The question is related to some of the sites that are using SharePoint groups for permissions. (and not Office 365 groups)

Issue: Power users with Member permissions would like to add other users to the SP Contribute group. At present they real on IT to do this. Is there a way to accomplish this? Ideally we would NOT like to assign Power Users “Site Owner” permissions where they can delete entire site.

One of the options is to make Member Group owner of the Contributor Group but then we will need to  bookmark permissions URL for every site. Any other options or way to accomplish this? Thank you.

So you can create an actual SharePoint group on the site, that you can specify the owner of and assign the 365 group members as the owner of that SharePoint group. Then they can add and remove the users from it. Now you can't have one group across all SharePoint cause it would affect all sites, but if you are creating these per site, then you can assign that SharePoint group on that site owner to a 365 group and they can manage it there.

We tried to assign Office 365 group as the owner of a SharePoint group but getting this error:

A domain group cannot be the owner of a group.@Chris Webb
