Self-Service Modern Site / Group creation ends in access denied

I've tried configuring it to use /teams/ and i've tried using /groups but the new modern fast site collection creation always ends in access denied for me now that modern team sites have landed in my tenant.  Has anyone else seen this issue and is there a workaround to make creation from the SharePoint home page work?

I have not seeing this. I guess you will have to open a support ticket
