So we have a super weird issue where some users in some doc libraries are experiencing this:

  • User opens file in Word Online in Doc Library Alpha
  • User selects "Open in Desktop App
  • Word App launches briefly, and then closes completely
  • Same user accessing a new library (Doc Library Bravo) everything works as expected
  • Same user accessing both libraries on a DIFFERENT machine has no issues at all
  • Other users accessing both libraries on their machines have no issues at all

Has anyone experienced this?

Hi,

Thanks for sharing with our community.

All the users have different machines and maybe you need to check the license for the user?

Or The machines need to be updated for some users?

There should be some other tools that make the Word stop? Did you check this possibility and did you kill the Microsoft office word form Task management and tried again?

Thank you

Kind Regards

Seray

@Michael Malloy I've had this issue due to a pop up blocker.  It's possible to check for that - or to ask the user to try it in another web client.

@Michael Malloy does your libraries have custom mandatory metadata? Not sure if related because of the results of your tests but the word sharepoint properties add-on is not working and making word crash since last week.

It will automatically try to open when there is an empty mandatory custom column. If Word is starting properly when you open a document having custom metadata, go into word "Display" menu, you will find a SharePoint section with "Properties". Click on it to see if Word will crash.
