Modern Sites without Groups

Copper Contributor

For a number of reasons, I would like to leverage modern SharePoint Team sites and their associated benefits (such as classification) without using Office 365 Groups. We are of course also using Groups, but we have many use cases where we want the SharePoint site without the group.

I understand we can update the sites' home pages with modern pages.

Will we ever be able to create modern team sites without Groups?

A communication site is a modern site without a group technically.
But you can use the admin center to also create classic sites and just create new modern pages within those as well.

Thanks Christopher! I have been creating classic site collections and then adding modern home pages. But I want to use the classifications as well! Also, it's bit tedious having to add the custom pages. And I want to be able to change the theme the modern way like you can on the group sites.

Well, if you want to use site classification you have to choices:
(1) Just crate a modern SPO site that as you mention, creates a Group. Of course, you need first to enable classification in your tenant: https://www.sharepointeurope.com/using-site-classification-sharepoint-sites/
(2) Just create a classic SPO Site and implement your own classification stuff: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/dev/solution-guidance/implement-a-sharepoint-site-classi...

In regards of new theme options, you only have them in modern spo sites and communication sites

Thank you! I appreciate your responses. This adds a little clarify.

When I've created Modern pages on a classic sites, I've noticed the mobile experience is still classic, not modern.   Is there some setting I'm missing?  Just weary of creating classic sites and "modernizing" them and possible other features or new features that are not compatible with mobile or the site because it was built as classic first.

Any suggestions?
