Managed metadata and content types

Copper Contributor

Hi all,

I'm looking at moving all content from shared drives onto SharePoint sites.

I do not want to replicate the drives by using a folder structure, instead I want to use content types.

I've come across managed metadata and not quite sure how this works in conjunction with content types, almost feels like both work in a similar way? (perhaps not but I'm not advanced with SP).

So for example:

Library - for our legal team cases

Content Types - Contracts, Meeting documents, notices etc... within the content types there might be metadata such as years, case ID, Client name.

Now this seems to work fine so what manage metadata would I use instead of the metadata within the content types? Hopefully that makes sense and it would be great to hear experiences of what others have done for document management.
