Links between documents in Sharepoint online library

The issue is that after moving documents to Sharepoint online library basic function that was used to save documents that are linked together is no longer available.  The method used was saving document after opening them from a link inside of other document.

The scenario:

We have a powerpoint documents and each slide has a link to Excel document.  Often we need to change the Excel documents and return the change back in the ppt by saving the Excel file.

The steps are:

Opening ppt.

Update links are working ok

But when clicking on a link the document opens but in read only mode.

So if we want to change the Excel document we have to browse to the location and open from there to make the changes.  Before going to SP Online this was working ok.

We found out that there is a way to create an icon to the excel document by using Insert object function and adding ?Web=0 to the end of the link.  This workaround opens the document in read only but gives the option to override existing document.   This raises the question if it is possible to edit the link from the original link and adding ?Web=0 to make this working again.

The link is not editable.  The link is created with paste special command and when looking at the link it cannot be edited.  Is there a workaround to edit the link?
