Intranet: How to organize URLs

Brass Contributor

Hi.

For our upcoming intranet based on SharePoint Online, we're looking into how to organize site URLs to avoid name collisions. Example: Both the IT services site and the communication site for the IT department may compete for example.sharepoint.com/sites/IT unless we follow a strict naming standard.

We're a university, so we'll probably going to go for different hubs such as IT Services and HR Services, and for all the faculties they'll have their own (potentially hub) site.

How have other sharepoint online users laid out their (intranet) site URLs, especially company facing communications sites and hub sites? Does you URLs indicate whether a site is a hub site? Does the URLs indicate if a site is a company function site such as HR hub, or if it's a site for company facing department information?
