Incremental Numbering appending to filename whenever new item is added in SharePoint Online

Copper Contributor

Hello Team,

I require your assistance were I want to create auto incremental numbering to file and folder name where whenever a folder/file is added to library, filename should get appended with incremental number from the previous one. Numbering should be incremental as per their relevancy in particular folder.

I was researching and tried to refer some posts where it suggests to create SPD Workflow but could not come with up actions and logic

Is this something possible in SharePoint Online? If yes, please help me through the steps.

I really need help on this. Can you please help me with any steps or how can I achieve this as I have been discussing and found that this could be easy if done using Remote Event Receivers but I am not aware how and where to start from.

Please help

Ironically, while you want your files being duplicated with increasing numbers and no one seems to be able to help, exactly this seems to happen here, but I do not know why and so I am searching how to turn it off  :)

Incrementing  numbers and appending to a filename can be done quite easily with a flow in Power Automate. But it's a very old thread so I won't post the steps here unless someone really needs them.

What is it you are trying to turn off @Alex Schuster

The feature VPO365 wants.

But I just found out is is not related to SharePoint. A user in my company is editing documents locally, and something seems to create copies, with numbers at the end of the files being increased. OneDrive syncs this to SharePoint, and others wondered where all those files came from.

@RobElliott

Hi, I am really needing to have incremental number in filename in Flow. Would you please share the code?

Thanks

@Alex Schuster we are having a similar auto-incrementing issue with OneDrive &B SharePoint.  Did you ever find what was causing it for you?

@JeffD_SBC We did not dig further into this. As I wrote above, this was not about SharePoint, just some local software creating copies of files that were synced to OneDrive.
Whatever it was, the user who experienced (and reported) this behaviour turned it off, and all was good.

Thanks. Our user seems to have determined it was caused by locating his local OneDrive folder inside his iCloud folder on his Mac. Something about the dual replication services was causing it. Moving the OneDrive folder stopped the problem.

@RobElliott

can you please post the flow, I tried to make a quick search but I did not find it.

Thank you very much for your support.
