How to change the New Item Form settings

I feel like I'm losing my mind here. I have a sharepoint list I put together a few months ago, and when you go to the new item form it displays the fields in 3 columns. I'm making another list right now, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make the new item form display with more than one column of fields. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To configure the layout of the form? After clicking on new item, click on the icon on the top right and select Configure Layout.
