Error while unregistering Hub Site

I try to unregister the root site as a Hub Site in order to set a new root site. When I do it in the SharePoint Admin I get an error message.

Even after doing it via Powershell (Unregister-SPOHubSite) the site seems to be a Hub Site. In consequence I cannot change the root site of our tenant.

Any hints for me?

Are there any sites associated with the Hub? If that's not the case and a possible cause for the error you are having, I would recommend to open a support ticket so they can take a look

There are no sites assigned to that Hub any more.

The root site seemed still to be connected to the (not existing) hub. After removing the orphaned association via Powershell (Remove-SPOHubSiteAssociation) all works fine.
