Does .MOV file supported in Sharepoint Online?

Copper Contributor

Hi guys,

Is .mov video file format supported in Sharepoint Online? There seems to be contradiction in Microsoft articles. In one Microsoft article regarding video formats for Office 365, .mov file is not listed.

However, in another Microsoft article, it talks about playing .mov file in Sharepoint Online library.

Would like to know if .mov files is supported in Sharepoint Online library.

Many thanks in advance :)

Well, indeed there is not a contradiction there because you are referring to two different services so what we can say is that the support is different:
1) On the one hand, first link provided is related to Office 365 Video that relies on Azure Media Serviecs to reproduce a video uploaded to Office 365 Video. While you can upload the video there, Office 365 Video will not be able to play it because the .mov format. The good news here are that instead of using Office 365 Video you should use Microsoft Stream that supports .MOV: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/stream/input-audio-video-formats-codecs
2) SharePoint Online itself as a document storage service allows you without problems to store .mov files

Hi Juan,

Thanks for the reply. What i'm actually wondering is whether .mov file can be played from Sharepoint Online library. For example, if we upload a .mp4 file to Sharepoint library and click it, the video can be played. But when we upload .mov file and click to play it, the video can't be played.

I tried finding articles that state specifically the video formats that can be played in SharePoint Online libraries but couldn't find any hence i was under the impression that the first link i provided is the closest.

Do you know if there is a separate list of video formats that can be played in SharePoint Online libraries?

Many thanks,

Pravin

AFAIK, there is not such a list. Also bear in mind that SPO is not well sutied to reproduce videos and that's the reason why we have Office 365 Video and Microsoft Stream for that purporse
