Adding column formatting in library changes data

A recent change to SharePoint has changed the way the filed 'approval status' shows if you have conditional formatting rather than actually showing as text 'draft', 'approved' etc. to 0, 2, 3

 

If I remove my formatting I get the words back but as soon as I try to create new formatting they change back to numbers.
